Durban - The state on Wednesday withdrew a charge of obstructing police officers in the course of their duty that was laid against controversial soccer player Bryce Moon at the weekend.
It referred the case for “alternative dispute resolution”. This is a process used by the courts to resolve cases by way of negotiation between the parties in order to avoid clogging up the court rolls with relatively minor cases.
Moon appeared in court for less than a minute while the prosecution confirmed that charges had been dropped.
His attorney, Terence Chetty, declined to release a statement on behalf of Moon, but said he might decide to do so later.
Moon’s father, Patrick, said that a misunderstanding had occurred when his son tried to tell police they were arresting the wrong person for an alleged offence.
Police said they were called to Curry Road in Woodlands last Friday to investigate a report about the theft of a motorbike from a pizza delivery man. Moon was arrested and charged when he allegedly interfered with police at the scene.
Moon faces a culpable homicide charge in Johannesburg in connection with an incident in which a woman was knocked down and killed in 2009.
The accident reportedly occurred while Moon was driving back from a banquet in Sandton after the Confederations Cup final between Brazil and the United States.
