Cape Town - Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu believes coach Stuart Baxter deserves to retain his position as he understands South African players.
Speculation has been mounting over Baxter's future despite the fact that Bafana went out in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations to Nigeria.
The national team recorded a superb victory over hosts Egypt in the Round-of-16 though it seems he could still step down, or be relieved of his duties by the South African Football Association.
Zungu told reporters: "For me as a South African football player, to have a coach that understands our mentality as players is a blessing.
"He understands us as players, he understands South African football and that has helped a lot of players.
"That's something a lot of people don't know, because a lot happens in camp. I would like him to stay and hopefully we will carry on and grow with players and do well."
