SAFA sets date for Bafana AFCON squad announcement

Cape Town - The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the date for the Bafana Bafana squad announcement for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 32nd edition of the first-ever 24-team tournament takes place in Egypt from June 21 - July 19.

South Africa have been drawn in Group D in what has been termed the 'Group of Death' where they will face Morocco, Ivory Coast and Namibia.

Who head coach Stuart Baxter selects in his final 23-man squad shall be revealed on Tuesday, May 21.

Thulani Hlatshwayo is expected to be named as captain for the tournament with long-serving goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune nurturing his way back to fitness following a shoulder injury.

"Khune is training fully (at Chiefs) and it's now a matter of being match fit. He will have to play games before we could consider him. But I will be in contact obviously, through Lee (Baxter's son and Chiefs' goalkeeper coach) and through Chiefs to monitor his progress from here until the end of the season," said the Bafana coach last month after being probed whether he will select Khune for the tournament.

Meanwhile, star forward Percy Tau who picked up a knee injury while playing for his Belgium club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise earlier this month, appears he will be fit to in time for selection.

Bafana get their tournament under way against the Ivory Coast on June 24 in Cairo before playing at the same venue on June 28 against Namibia.

They then round off the group stage with a match against Morocco on July 1.
