Injury crises sees Pule, Modiba receive Bafana call-up

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has confirmed that Vincent Pule, Aubrey Modiba and Tiyani Mabunda have been called up to the national squad.

The trio will replace Themba Zwane, Hlompho Kekana and Bongani Zungu who have been rule out of Saturdays Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya through injury.

"We got to touch on the injured players," said Baxter at the press conference in Durban ahead of the match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium

"I got a text from the club [Amiens SC], saying that Bongani Zungu has twisted his knee and may have ligament damage."

Lebo Mothiba, who recently signed for RC Strasbourg Alsace in a multi-million deal, is said to have suffered a hamstring tear over the weekend.

Baxter confirms that before a decision is made they will wait on the scan results from the French Ligue 1 outfit.

"I am waiting for a report from France regarding Mothiba who has a hamstring tear. That takes 17 days to recover," said Baxter.

Bafana Bafana have already accumulated three points from their opening Group E fixture after defeating African powerhouse Nigeria 2-0 in October last year.

Meanwhile, Baxter has appointed his son, Lee, as the national side goalkeeper coach in the absence of Andre Arendse.

South Africa are schedule to face Libya at 15:00.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
