Loss to Botswana means Banyana Banyana won't go to Tokyo 2020

Cape Town - Botswana have beaten Banyana Banyana 3-2 on penalties, and in doing ended their chances of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

After the first leg of the first round qualifier for the Games ended 0-0 on Friday, Banyana would have fancied their chances of using home ground advantage to beat their neighbours and proceed in the qualifying tournament.

It was not to be however, and after the teams could not be seperated after 120 minutes of soccer, it was penalties that decided the match.

Sadly for South Africa, they could only score from the spot through Leandra Smeda and Bambanani Mbane in a dramtic shootout that saw both teams failing to take advantage of each other's mistakes.

Botswana, however, eventually prevailed to break South African hearts.

Earlier this year, Banyana qualified for and took part in the Women's World Cup in France where they gave an excellent account of themselves.
