Khune one Bafana appearance away of milestone

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune admits that he keeps track on the number of national appearances he has made for Bafana Bafana.

According to the SowetanLIVE website, the 31-year-old has equalled former team-mate Siphiwe Tshabalala's Bafana Bafana caps (89) when South Africa routed Seychelles 6-0 on Saturday at the FNB Stadium in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

For the return leg against the island nation on Tuesday, Khune is in line to start for Stuart Baxter's charges at the Linte Stadium in the capital of Victoria.

The feat would see the shot-stopper become the second most capped player for Bafana Bafana.

Former South Africa men's national team captain and defender Aaron Mokoena still holds the record for the most caps with 107.

OPINION: Bafana can’t rest on their laurels yet

"I've been keeping track of my caps and number of clean sheets," said Khune ahead of the Tuesday's fixture.

"I just want to continue working hard and reaching other milestones in the national team jersey."

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana are four points away from a guaranteed spot at next year's AFCON tournament hosted in Cameroon but Khune has urged his team-mates to aim for maximum points from their remaining three Group E games.

"For us we just have to keep our feet firmly on the ground and not take anything for granted. It will be the first time for most players to go to the Seychelles.

"According to our calculations, we are four points away from qualification but we will push for all nine points [in the three remaining matches]."

Kick-off is at 15:30 (SA time).
