Fans welcome Banyana Banyana back home after WWC

Cape Town - Fans welcomed back head coach Desiree Ellis and her Banyana Banyana players after they arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of fans packed the airport to show their support by welcoming back the players despite crashing out of the Women's Soccer World Cup group stages after three consecutive defeats.

"Yes we failed at our objective to qualify from the group stages, but we did not fail the country," captain Janine van Wyk said.

"This is just the beginning for this team and we need to keep moving forward as a team."

Banyana crashed out of the tournament after suffering defeat against Germany on Monday. South Africa were thrashed 4-0 at the Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier in their final Group B fixture.

This comes after Ellis' side suffered further defeats to Spain (3-1) and China (1-0).
