Bucs' Rhulani Mokwena gets Bafana role

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter has rewarded Rhulani Mokwena with a role in the technical team ahead of an international friendly tournament in Zambia.

Baxter announced a new-look squad on Tuesday to play in the four-nation competition that will also feature Zambia, Zimbabwe and Angola.

The in-demand Mokwena has been praised for helping Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic in improving the fortunes of the Soweto giants this season as the Serbian's assistant.

The Buccaneers are second in the Premiership and trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by four points.

Baxter said his decision to rope in Mokwena for Bafana is to make sure that young coaches are empowered.

"We are inviting Rhulani Mokwena, the young coach from Pirates, to be with us on this camp because we do want to make sure that young coaches also are empowered," the Englishman told the media on Tuesday.

"So he will join us, and he will look at what we do, we will use his capacity and we hope that we can follow that theme for the new steps."

South Africa's first game in the tournament is on March 22 against Angola and will come up against either Zambia or Zimbabwe three days later.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
