Bafana can get better - Hunt

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes Bafana Bafana haven’t built on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1996, but that with the Under-23 team going to the Olympics later this year, there is the opportunity for South Africa to improve as a football nation.

Hunt appears on The Dan Nicholl Show at 19:00 on SuperSport 1 on Wednesday, where he speaks frankly about the state of local football.

“I think we’ve let ourselves down badly since 1996,” Hunt suggests. “We should be far better than we actually are, and we should be way up the rankings.”

“I think we do overrate ourselves sometimes,” Hunt concedes, “ but I do feel there are huge opportunities for our players, especially with the Olympics. That’s a good opportunity for those players to go on and play for the national team.”

Hunt also admits that he’d like to tackle the Bafana coaching job one day: “I think every coach would want to look after his national team day, if the chance was there.”

Hunt enjoys some entertaining to and fro on Wednesday's show with comedian Tumi Morake, who suggests that the answer to Bafana’s woes is to slaughter a cow; also on this week is ultra distance runner Ryan Sandes, recently returned from a successful trip to New Zealand and preparing to launch his autobiography, and all 12 Miss South Africa finalists, who turn out to be big fans of Hunt. Olympic swimmer Ryk Neethling also makes an appearance, as he takes host Dan Nicholl on his maiden polo lesson.

Wednesday's show marks the end of season two of The Dan Nicholl Show, with season three set to start on SuperSport next month.
