Too many Bafana critics: Zuma

2013-01-15 14:17

Johannesburg - There are too many critics complaining about Bafana Bafana who have never played professional soccer, President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday.

"There are too many critics. I was telling the team that others who are critics who have never touched the football," Zuma said.

"They don't know how it feels to be inside here."

Zuma was speaking after a private meeting with the team in Orlando Stadium, Soweto, ahead of an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Flanked by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, Zuma said the players had to relax before their matches.

"We have come to tell the national team that they must relax. They must not be tense and they must not listen to all these critics," he said. "They must just play what they know."

He said the whole of South Africa was behind the team.

Zuma said he had asked to touch the AFCON trophy.

"I just wanted to touch it. Touching it means we should be there at the final and we should take it."

The president said South Africa did well in preparing for the tournament, considering it was meant to be held in Libya, and did not have a long time to plan for it.

He said he was satisfied that the team was ready for the tournament.

"If you know soccer, you have got to see whether all departments are working in the field," Zuma said.

"This is so that you have goals that are played (scored) scientifically."

When Zuma took to the field to pose with the team, the Bafana Bafana players greeted him with a rendition of his trademark song, "Awulethu Umshini Wami" [bring me my machine-gun].

He was also presented with a personalised team jersey.

Ja rite Zuma u can tell them that coz bribing won't help!

      ruan.smith.14 - 2013-01-15 14:34

true!! ha ha even professional chess has a larger appeal for spectators to watch!!

      nrgx.nrg - 2013-01-15 15:13

Mac the Mouth must be on holiday, zuma has come up with a few jewels this week. And this is right up there, I dont play professional football, therefore I cannot be a fan who wants my team to succeed. Guess Ill support a winning team....GO BOKKE, GO PROTEAS!

      konstabel.koekemoer - 2013-01-15 15:32

So I guess Zuma will tell us next that we must not criticize the job he's doing as presdent because we have never been president of a country.

      gay.theitis - 2013-01-15 16:00

Any of those beautiful bafana boys can put their boots under my bed... Atheitis - 2013-01-15 16:02

There are also too many critics about food security and farm violence who have never herded goats before...

SS "Seriously Stupid" now why would anyone want to watch the empty space between your ears...................

      keithpatkell - 2013-01-18 06:09

Jeez...I wish I could be part of the fun but I don't think I am allowed to buy a ticket! You see, I would just LOVE to support BafanBafna in the CAF Cup, but I am "white" and therefore not "African" enough (according to the President of South Africa), even though I am a born and bred, proud SOUTH AFRICAN, so as much as I would WISH to be part of the excitement and build up to the tournament I feel I would be intruding upon the "real BLACK African" supporters, because of my "despised" skin pigmentation! I suppose I will simply have to make do with supporting the Proteas in their One Day Cricket Internationals against the Black (oops, pardon the pun) Caps of New Zealand, since, I believe. CRICKET is still perceived to be a "WHITE" sport here in South Africa!

  • Neo Mafabatho - 2013-01-15 14:34

You don't have to have played soccer professionally to tell that Bafana are playing crap.

      iam.thato.3 - 2013-01-15 15:01

Playing Crap according to who's standards???its so sad to see how pethetic we south Africans are when it comes to supporting.have you ever wondered how Algerian must have felt to draw with a team thats 20 postions behind them.. yea sure south Africa won it once! that doesnt mean we should be the Best African team in the world... when Spring boks lose we dont hear all this critcs come out and say all the bad things! WE SUPPORT ALL THE WAY.

      nrgx.nrg - 2013-01-15 15:09

But Thato...whats wrong with aspiring to BE THE BEST, or should we just accept mediocre displays?

      Chris - 2013-01-15 15:13

@Thato: Actually the Boks took a lot of flak last year for their dismal performances. Bafana have consistently underpeformed for years and people are tired of it.

      sharkie.fin - 2013-01-15 15:14

Nice spelling Thato. Stick to Zulu or whatever.

@Thato, they are playing crap according to FIFA's standards. #87 in world rankings. Go check the rating for the rugby and cricket teams. Then tell me again...

  • chris.buchner.12 - 2013-01-15 14:34

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2013-01-15 15:13

It's our privilege to complain when a national team gets so much publicity plays so pathetic. They lose against the worst teams in the world. Take a lesson from the cricket and rugby teams. Further more, mr Zuma, stop patronizing mediocre performance because Bafana will start thinking that they are champs!

  • shyguyhr - 2013-01-15 14:35

There are also too many politicians who are uneducated, ignorant and do not know what they are talking about, yet they are not scared to comment on all sorts of issues, frequently inserting both feet in their mouth at once...

  • jofouche - 2013-01-15 14:38

Hey JZ I've never touched a cricket ball either and you don't hear me complain. Next thing you'll hear is because they're black. So sick of these please don't critisize me crap. Be a man and get your act together and play some soccer that we can be proud of. Bafana is an embarrasment for the country.

So do we have to be professional soccer players if we want to compliment Bafana too? Every time Zuma opens his mouth these days he puts his foot in it! And this is the moron, the ANC elected for another five years. He'll be completely senile by the time his second term is up....

  • Fox Trixter - 2013-01-15 14:43

Zuma! why dont you organise a friendly game between your bodyguards and bafana to be played at Nkandla Stadium you build with our monies

Zuma please shutup and don't talk about them. There is no brains in the team and that is why they always lose. They think like you.Just look at the country.

  • FeebleGastro - 2013-01-15 14:46

"the Bafana Bafana players greeted him with a rendition of his trademark song, "Awulethu Umshini Wami" [bring me my machine-gun]." We have really sunk to the African pits.

  • neil.fromearth - 2013-01-15 14:47

Boy is this guy a f*&K*ing douche bag, He can't/wont comment on important political issues but can quite happily lend his expert opinion on soccer. I am not just pissed at Zuma for being an incompetent thieving scumbag, but the millions of naive idiots who vote for him.

      Bongeka - 2013-01-15 15:58

The gabadge that you're spewing right now says a lot about you. So I'll suggest that you take a deep breath, relax and start talking like an intelligent person since you claim others are idiots. And who do intelligent people like you vote for? We all have a freedom of choice, remember that. And what works for you doesn't automatically work for me and the rest too.

  • Sello MaJacky Majadibodu - 2013-01-15 14:50

Yes, Zuma knows what he s talking about. He once played at a professional level with the club called UmKhondo weSizwe FC. He was the captain(Head of intelligence)

  • christopher.douglas.12914 - 2013-01-15 14:50

you tell em Msholozi, you tell em mate? they dont know jack about the game yet the go on as if they won the champions league... tell em baba and ask them to bring their machine guns!! AYOBA

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2013-01-15 14:51

Oh for heaven's sake - these are football and Bafana fans you are talking about you idiot. Do all the people who fill the stadiums to support Bafana play football? Not at all. They are fans and fans are happier supporting a winning team. If you insist JZ, let the team play to empty stadiums because we are not professional footballers and should therefore not even watch the game. Or is this a prelude to you saying that people who criticise your politics are not politicians and should therefore shut up? Come on Mac, earn your salary and put another positive spin to this nonsense.

  • gregory.jurgens - 2013-01-15 14:54

Losers are losers , you don't need to be a professional soccer player to to tell the difference between winning and losing.

  • pitso.dlungwana - 2013-01-15 14:54

Mr Zuma, you don't have to play football to understand it. all we want is Bafana Bafana to win that all!

Not true Thato, people also get very critical when the Sprigboks loose. Of course the president must support and encourge our team, but why make such ridiculous statements ... he needs to think before opening his mouth.

      johnny.better.12 - 2013-01-15 15:44

  • pc.myass - 2013-01-15 15:10

Bafana Bafana belongs to the nation. They represent South Africa, and as such they represent me. When they are playing for South Africa they are being funded with my tax money, and as such, I have the right to critisize them. There is no honor in losing. We have a system in South Africa that rewards mediocrity and incompetence (BEE). Unfortunately the rest of the world play by different rules...the best team will win. Incompetence and mediocrity on a global scale is rewarded with scorn and disdain. Only in South Africa do we regard losers like Bafana Bafana, Zuma and Malema as National Heroes.

  • velile.moses.16 - 2013-01-15 15:11

Baba Msholozi you better focus on some sports like Induku,Murabaraba, chess and Ingqathu because the current bb performance is very poor for you to guarantee them that they'll snatch the title

Who is behind this bunch of losers who can only win against mediocre teams or if they bribe the ref, bigger losers ie Zuma. This is the worst sports team,Bafana Bafana,we have in this country because there are no whites in the team. This team are going to fall out very fast when the AFCON games begin.

  • Dennis - 2013-01-15 15:21

Very simple do your job as professional soccer players and start winning and the criticism goes away. Coming from JZ ignoring criticism is his everyday job as he also never delivers.

  • nico.eksteen.7 - 2013-01-15 15:22

Did bafana qualify for AFCON in the normal way or are we just participating because we are hosting the event (like with the world cup)?

      The latter, in both cases.

  • mpho.c.moreki - 2013-01-15 15:37

Mr president those players are proffessionals and they should deliver the expected results like professionals.critics are there to build the team

  • evert.vanstaaden - 2013-01-15 15:37

Mr. Zuma, we are not critics, we are fans, and the team playing represents our country, they represent us, so if they dominate a football game with 67% possesion and they still can't stick the ball in the back of the net, with is pretty much the point of the game, we will make our dissatisfaction heard.
