Shakes is the reason for Bafana success - Fans

Cape Town - Sport24 readers have credited coach Shakes Mashaba for the team's great form.

South Africa have secured qualification to AFCON 2015 after a fine run in Group A which has seen the national side's fortunes dramatically transformed and Sport24 readers are have cried out (almost) in unison that he coach is the reason for the recent success.

Sport24 asked: "What is the reason behind Bafana Bafana's recent success?" and 65% (over 1125 readers) of the votes cast were in favour of the "Shakes Mashaba getting the best of out the players" option.

Mashaba has done things his own way since taking over the job from Gordon Igesund and the fans are getting behind the coach and his new-look team. Mashaba has handed Ajax Cape Town youngster Rivaldo Coetzee an integral role in the heart of defence and has placed his faith in an attacking game plan regardless of the venue.

"A combination between youth and experience" was the second most supported reason for the national team's success but only managed to gain 24% (over 400 readers) of the votes. Mashaba must be congratulated on picking players who he believes in despite their age, their club or previous performances for Bafana Bafana team. The coach has managed to get a perfect balance in his squad thus far.

Mashaba has been questioned for leaving out the likes of Tsepo Masilela and a few other top performing players in the PSL this season but the coach cannot be faulted for his bold team selections which has seen his side top a challenging qualifying group.

The remaining options were far less supported as "the defence has been brilliant", "Great form away from home"and "Extra support from the fans" gathered only 11% combined.

South Africa take on Nigeria on Wednesday evening at 19:00 at the Uyo International Stadium with the Super Eagles looking for a win to secure their path to AFCON 2015.

Shakes Mashaba has promised that his side will be no walk overs and the match promises to be one of the games of the year.
