Shakes faces nervous wait

Polokwane - Ahead of their game against Ivory Coast this weekend, Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba is most likely to face a challenge with his selected players as Kaizer Chiefs are yet to confirm the release of their players to the national squad for this encounter.

Bafana will square off against the Elephants in the 20th edition of the annual Nelson Mandela challenge at the Mbombela stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Only goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo and central defender Eric Mathoho has been called up for the Amakhosi but they are most likely to miss the clash.

Addressing the reporters in a press conference, following Chiefs goalless stalemate against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Tuesday night, Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter hinted that they are still going to consider certain aspects before releasing the duo to the national team as the game is not scheduled under the FIFA calendar.

"We will not do anything that hurts Kaizer Chiefs," said Baxter.

"We will also not do anything that doesn’t show our total support to the national team.

"Everyone must understand that if we are going to play any game, our players must be rested for two to three days after being involved in any match.

"And obviously, we must consider if that will hurt Kaizer Chiefs."

It remains to be seen if Chiefs will release their players for the national teams’ much anticipated clash.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
