SAFA doesn't 'know' the rules

2011-10-11 11:20

Johannesburg - The South African Football Association is on a wild goose chase in protesting against the elimination of Bafana Bafana from next year's African Cup of Nations tournament, Kaizer Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung said.

Former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker also criticised Safa over the team's elimination, after a goalless qualifying round draw against Sierra Leone in Nelspruit on Saturday.

Motaung said: "I'm afraid Safa are way off the mark in stating that the deciding factor in such cases must be goal difference. SAFA are entitled to make their own rules for their own events and those presently tabulated have been in force for a number of years. SAFA should have been aware of this."

SAFA should face the facts of its own bungling, Motaung said.

Barker was even more scathing in his comments. "The rules employed for the African Nations Cup are entrenched and SAFA and the Bafana technical staff should have been aware of them before the deciding game against Sierra Leone," he said.

"It is mind-boggling that no one at SAFA or in the Bafana set-up was familiar with the facts."

After an initial celebration on Saturday, the Bafana players and the crowd at the Mbombela Stadium heard from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that it was Niger which had qualified from the group.

Locals believed South Africa had qualified for next year's Afcon event on goal difference. The rules of the competition stipulate that if teams finish level on points - Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone all finished with nine points - the nett results of games involving the sides would be the deciding factor. This gave Niger six points and SA and Sierra Leone five each.

Motaung said several competitions under the control of the Union of European Football Associations followed a similar procedure to CAF.

Barker said that adding to the embarrassment was the fact that a Safa technical team, including president Kirsten Nematandani and vice-president Danny Jordaan, had been at Caf's meeting in Cairo two weeks ago. The two also serve on the 2012 Afcon organising committee.

"The reality," said Barker, "was that Bafana had to win that final game to qualify, even if Niger were beaten by Egypt - which, in fact, was what happened - yet every last man at Safa and in the Bafana camp believed a draw could be good enough."

Barker was also critical of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who appeared to feign injury in order to waste time towards the end of the game.

      Cas - 2011-10-11 13:35

What does ANC has to do with this? Does it always have to be racial. Come on guys, why cant we just get along. Everytime I read the comments on News24, all I see is racial divisions and Hatred. Do we really hate each other that much? Does everything has to be Blacks vs. Whites?

      herdz - 2011-10-11 13:53

@Waheed you forgot the SA rugby union, please include it in the list of in-competitiveness.

  • TRC911 - 2011-10-11 11:54

Thanx SAFA for embarrassing the whole country in front of small african countries.

  • MAXIMUS - 2011-10-11 11:56

Did anyone see SAFA CEO on the news last night, speaking absolute rubbish with a straight face. The problem with SAFA is that they will not come out and say... SORRY, WE MISSED SOME IMPORTANT INFO!!! In their defence, most people in this world don't know how to say.. "sorry, I was wrong". I am sur many people can testify to this.

  • Pencilgraffiti - 2011-10-11 11:59

Thank You Motaung and Barker! Finally some sense. Yes the rules may be crap and if you don't like them bring up for future debate but that does not change the facts that the team management was incompetent. And instead of apologising to the South African public, they attack CAF... Big egos, lil skill... Same problem government has.

      Leviathan - 2011-10-11 12:15

totally agree. never jst presume the rules, u should always read, plus this rule has bin round 4 ages. SAFA we always knew u guys wer idiots but this jst shows the entire world u guys (SAFA) dont have a clue about football

  • Taurus 11 - 2011-10-11 12:05

Itumeleng You thought you were clever ? Sorry but the way you acted the number on your back is higher than your IQ. If you had not wasred so much time perhaps BAFFING ANNAS may have won the game nad qualified. You will be lucky if Kaiser keeps you in his club, Iwould not because you are an idiotic clown

  • Lonewolfman - 2011-10-11 12:09

Hahahaha what a bunch of idiots and they are what leads us to the world arena. LOL only way we play in such comps is if we host it. Sad but true!!!

      Leviathan - 2011-10-11 14:25

haha. Agree tats why we wil b in AFCON 2013 coz wer hosting it

  • John - 2011-10-11 12:10

Judging from the "celebrations" Banana Banana should enter Strictly Come Dancing, because they are bloody useless at football

  • almosthuman - 2011-10-11 12:20

yeah...these guys cant man up and say sorry South Africa...we messed up...we didnt know the rules properly and it is due to OUR negligence that Bafana are out ! they will rather try to swindle a result by putting pressure onto CAF,maybe they get away with this sort of thing in S/Africa...but they will just make us look like maaifoedies.

  • McDaNife - 2011-10-11 12:27

Thanks Clive and Kaizer. Still cannot believe SAFA could not do their home work looking at permutations that will take them through and all depended on this final game. Those bungling officials should have their necks on the block by now coz they have caused a huge embarassment to the south african public. Please let the world know not all of us South Africans are illiterate like SAFA officals and Bafana Bafana players. And the number 1 idiot, Khune, the bungling goalkeeper.

  • willie werkie - 2011-10-11 12:30

When Shaun Pollock and Eric Simons made a similar balls up in 2003 in the cricket World Cup they were both fired for not knowing the rules.

  • LD - 2011-10-11 12:59

Fire the whole lot!!!!!!!!! From Nemat...whoever to Nonk... (worse, he is an advocate), to Mosimane. SA Soccer has never been done so much injustice. Collect all SAFA vehicles and keys to SAFA House. They are useless.

  • AjaxFiko - 2011-10-11 13:07

People, this is SAFA, nothing to do with either the ANC or politics at all. Just putting it out there before my nigg@r Julius comes up in this discussion.

      AjaxFiko - 2011-10-11 14:00

Great, all the ANC haters from the News section have migrated over to the Sports' section (soccer in particular). . .now that there's nothing interesting about Rugby you've got too much time on your hands. All those with thumbs down. .eat a d!ck! I'm just pointing it out there that this article is NOT about politics. SAFA is not the ANC.

  • Just_saying - 2011-10-11 14:04

The only people to blame here are Bafana Bafana, if you cant beat a bunch of diamond miners who play soccer on the weekend then you dont deserve to be in the African Cup of Nations.

  • Byron - 2011-10-11 14:37

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha IDIOTS!!!!

  • Xolani Malinga - 2011-10-11 14:58

South Africa football is run by idiots, who all should be fired. First the president of SAFA, the whole technical team (Pitso is getting R800 000 a month) and he is useless. The coach who actually won the African Cup of Nation in 1996 was told he is crazy for requiring an increase to his salary to R30 000 a month. He was subsequently fired. Pitso must take his big head and go to false bay to be shark food. Lastly Khune must be droped from the National Team he been costing Chiefs in every game now he cost Bafana Bafana. Let dis idiot go back to the hole he came from.

  • Mkushi - 2011-10-11 15:02

Pity administration has fallen away, as in most cases, as Clive Barker says: "The rules employed for the African Nations Cup are entrenched and SAFA and the Bafana technical staff should have been aware of them before the deciding game against Sierra Leone,It is mind-boggling that no one at SAFA or in the Bafana set-up was familiar with the facts." Reminds me of poor Shuan Pollack situation.

  • Nawe - 2011-10-11 15:37

So the the President,Ceo & Coach does not understand rules. WOW! Pitso must go fry eggs in hell. This man has been the biggest fraud at the helm of S.A Soccer team. He's been in the crux of things for about four years & lets assess his performance thus far. Failed to qualify for Afcon in 2010, Guided Bafana to 1st round elimination in the Soccer W/C and now failed to qualify for for 2nd Afcon. Is this the man to guide us to the next W/C in Brazil? I don't think so....

  • ernest.baiden - 2011-10-12 11:48

DID YOU KNOW? Continue reading the main story Europe's football body Uefa is using the same head-to-head regulations as Caf to determine its group winners for the 2012 European Championships

  • Keabetswe Mojapelo - 2011-10-12 14:53

Pitso failed! Why isnt this guy on the galotine?!!! He played for a draw, that was his mandate from the start of the last game

  • solomoyo - 2011-10-13 18:34

that shows ignorant and so embarrassing how can a professional body fail to understand Caf's rules and regulation in front of their desk,it shows that they not committed to work for the nation and we are now calling the minister of sport to intervine in this board because they proved themselves to the world that they not capable of leading football in south africa.

  • Twizzle - 2011-10-14 12:05

in the wake of bafana's 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone. I believe its only fair that someone stated the obvious. A news paper article once read "Bafana from kings of the continent to village idiots in the space of 10 years". That was back when they failed to score a single goal in the AFCON competition. Since then we have employed a 1.8 million a month coach we went on to the host the world cup adn became the only nation in history to host the event and not qaulify for the knock out stages. We did manage to beat France, but then again so did the other 2 teams in the group. Once again we have not qaulified for AFCON. Only now everyone is blaming SAFA. Lets take a page out of Egypts well written handbook. Dismiss Pitso and the entire current sqaud and lets start from the ground up. Also we need to stop saying that we must choose local based players and try and compare ourselves to the Spains and Italy's of this world, we are not them. We cant continue to punish players for the mere fact that they were so talented they were asked to apply their trade in the toughests leagues in the world. Lance davids come to mind. I'm sure theres a few others. Lets stop celebrating eventhough we have won nothing. Everyone jumps on the Julius Malema bandwagon, but it seems to me all of us have an intellectual defficiency.
