SAFA deny non-payment claim

Cape Town - The South African Football Association (SAFA) say they are disturbed by the malicious reports of the alleged non-payment of fees to Bafana Bafana players which were reported in the media.

According to the SAFA website, media reports claimed that senior members of the squad had complained that they were yet to receive their daily allowance of R500, ahead of the friendly against Gabon at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday. Kick-off is at 20:30.

As is the norm within the national team camps, players are paid their allowances and bonuses at the end of each camp.

“This is a normal procedure” said Bafana team manager Barney Kujane.

“This kind of reporting is malicious, inaccurate and sadly a rather typical example of the sensationalism that is increasingly associated with the coverage of issues around football.”

“Finally, it is important to place on record that the figures mentioned for the 'win and draw' bonuses whether in official or friendly matches are way off the mark,” he added.

The figures mentioned in the report were R60 000 for a win and R40 000 for a draw.
