Radebe: SAFA on right track

Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe firmly believes the South African Football Association are on the right track in terms of their search for new coach.

Domestic football's governing body on Thursday began the process of interviewing potential successors to the sacked of Pitso Mosimane, with five local candidates - Gordon Igesund, Steve Komphela, Gavin Hunt, Shakes Mashaba and Neil Tovey - shortlisted for the position.

All five of those men are South African, and ex-Leeds United defender Radebe is also under the impression Bafana do not need a foreign coach.

"Firstly, it was not a bad idea to sack Pitso (Mosimane) because we need new ideas for the team and I'm sure he (Mosimane) accepts that we needed a change because we were not getting the results. We want to see the best out of this team," Radebe told Football411.

"Secondly, I think it was a good idea to shortlist local coaches, because I don't think we need somebody from overseas. It is best to get someone with a better understanding of our football."

Radebe does, however, feel that whoever is appointed head coach will do better with a large technical team that can help him steady the ship.

"I don't think having a couple of coaches in the technical team will be enough," he said.

"I think the new coach will need a big technical team to help him with the selection of players, a motivator because players need that and so on to make sure they've got all angles covered.

"It won't be a bad idea to involve former coaches such as Clive Barker, but the bottom line is they must put together a technical team that will cover basically everything."
