Cape Town - Following their heavy AFCON 2017 Group M qualifer defeat at the hands of Mauritania, Sport24's Wade Pretorius rates the performances of the Bafana Bafana players.
As it happened: Mauritania 3-1 Bafana Bafana
After the dust has settled somewhat after Saturday night's drubbing in Nouakchott, here's how the national team's individual performances rated:
Itumeleng Khune - 2 The opposite of a captain's performance as he made a massive blunder to put his side 1-0 down inside a handful of minutes. Blameless for the next two goals but the game might've been different if he had held onto
Abeide's free kick.
Anele Ngcongca - 5 Did not have too much work to do defensively and flighted the ball in for
Gabuza's powerful header.
Siyabonga Zulu - 2 Sent off on debut for a professional foul - not much more to add.
Rivaldo Coetzee - 3 Shaky all evening and never settled. At fault alongside his centre-back partner for the second and third goals.
Eric Mathoho - 2 Horrible performance - please no one show him the replay of the third goal.
Dean Furman - 3 Defensively did alright but had a true imagination failure when trying to move the ball outside of his own half.
Andile Jali - 3.5 Only slightly better on the night than his midfielder partner. Jali never adapted to the pitch and his passing game struggled as a result.
Thulani Serero - 3 The Mauritania defense handled Serero with ease and he struggled to get into the game.
Mandla Masango - 3 Was good for the first 10 minutes but was rarely seen for the next 80...
Thamsanqa Gabuza - 6.5 The only player to finish the match with his reputation enhanced. Delightfully took advantage of some poor defending as he powered home a header. Maybe needed to drop deeper to help his struggling midfield at times.
Tokelo Rantie - 3.5 His lack of game time showed as
Mashaba's gamble to start with Rantie failed. Badly.
Substitutes: Mzikayise Mashaba - 4.5 Brought on after Zulu's red and did an okay job at left back.
Bongani Zungu - 5 Wasted a magnificent chance when Gabuza's cross found him inside the box with acres of space but he blazed his shot over. Improved after that and did make somewhat of an impact.
Sibusiso Vilakazi - Too little time to make an impact
