Mosimane sorry for outburst

2012-02-23 14:10

Durban - Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane infused new energy into the squad with three uncapped players for the international friendly against Senegal at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban next Wednesday.

Orlando Pirates' players were excluded from selection as they travel to Angola for the return leg of their CAF African Champions League encounter against Recreativo do Libolo.

"We have decided to exclude Pirates players because they will be playing in Angola three days after our game," Mosimane said in Durban on Thursday after naming his 23-man squad for the clash.

Pirates players were not considered so they could focus on their continental commitment, having lost the first leg 3-1 at home.

"We have to support them because it is a national campaign. We know what happened in South Africa when they won the league in 1996," he said.

Mosimane announced first call-ups for Swedish-based midfielder May Mahlangu and in-form Free State Stars' nippy forward Edward Manqele.

Another uncapped addition was AmaZulu midfield strongman Thami Sangweni, whose older brother, Siyabonga, was not selected as he travels with Pirates to Angola.

There were recalls for Santos' central defender Wayne Arendse and the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of left-back Punch Masenamela and forward Lebohang Mokoena.

The Kaizer Chiefs striking pair of Bernard Parker and Lehlohonolo Majoro were dropped after unconvincing displays in national colours over the past year.

Bafana vice-captain Siphiwe Tshabalala and midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane were not considered due to injury.

The side's captain Steven Pienaar returns a rejuvenated player after battling a series of injuries.

Back at Everton, where he is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premiership, the 30-year-old is starting to find best form again.

Midfield anchor Kagiso Dikgacoi, who plies his trade at Crystal Palace in the English league, also returns from injury.

Mosimane took the opportunity to apologise for his emotional tirade against the media in January after Bafana drew 1-1 against Ghana in Rustenburg.

He said the manner in which he responded to reports was caused by stress after the challenges he encountered preparing for the practice fixtures against both Zambia and the Ghanians.

"I need to clarify what happened," said Mosimane.

"I should not have generalised because there were some journalists who wrote positive stories.

"How many times have you guys written an obituary for me? How many times?

"Everybody wrote an obituary for us before we started. Everybody saw us being slaughtered.

"Everybody wrote, 'they turned the game into practice matches, they're afraid, they're scared'."

The squad assembles for camp on Sunday night and are expected in Durban on Monday morning.

  • Hallo - 2012-02-23 14:20

This guy is an amateur. He should go for some UEFA courses.

  • J.D. - 2012-02-23 14:21

It is OK Pitso, we understand your frustration. It is hard to lose all the time and see no prospects of any change in the future.

  • Poloyatonki - 2012-02-23 14:40

Pitso is a waste of time, he didnt even knew the rules of a tournament he was in thats why we didnt take part in 2012 Afcon, i wonder if knew the rules during the game against Ghana..

  • Nicholas - 2012-02-23 14:42

Don't worry, I'd also be frustrated if the team I was coaching kept losing or drawing all its matches and continued sliding down the FIFA rankings.

  • kgotso.mohlomi - 2012-02-23 14:55

south africa has the best players in the world according to me,i mean we can make another best squad with out these players...i mean the likes of jali, josephes, tshabalala, yeye, glad im a south african, how ever,we are not winning.but i have confidence with these players that we are going to do well..good luck bafana.!!!

      Nicholas - 2012-02-23 17:06

      Nothing like blind confidence!

The only reason why we write Pitso off is because we are tired of playing second fiddle to other African countries. We were once a top African Ranked team. The fans know what the countries football team is cable of achieving because it has once achieved greatness with limited resources. Please Pitso respect the SA football and its national pride by understanding one thing, we want to achieve success and if you can't handle it pack your bags and go. Right now your main goal is to guide us to a fruitfully CAF 2013 and W.C 2014 final without excuses. Keep quite and play ball!

      Gunner - 2012-02-24 08:44

      Well said

      Dennis - 2012-02-28 10:48

And you seriously believe they will qualify for both ???

  • Peter - 2012-02-23 15:11

We need to give this guy a time frame! C'mon SAFA, fire this amateur!!! No one has embarassed us on the national team like he did.

      siyat.bonanza - 2012-02-23 15:48

'No one has embarassed us on the national team like he did.' I hope you were being sarcastic. If not, then you are lying- Phillppe Troussea (whatever the man is), Ted D'mitru etc

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-02-24 07:41

Ted never won any game, his team did not even score a single goal

  • Malvern - 2012-02-23 15:20

I said it before Pitso was selected and i will sait again - he is a promising coach, but he is still too young and too raw for the job of national Coach. he has not seen the ins & outs of this game at his age. he also hasn't yet gained the wisdom that comes with age; perhaps this explains why he bursts out so frequently. Even in this briefing, he was already at it "How many times have you written me off, how many times". With years of coaching behind, dear Pitso, humility comes naturally. You are still struggling to be humble my dear Pitso.....

      Tokollo - 2012-02-23 15:32

I couldn’t have said it better. Pitso cannot control his anger this shifts allows the nation to lose trust and confidence in his ability as coach. I matured coach would apologise to the fans and gain their trust.

  • siyat.bonanza - 2012-02-23 15:54

Give Gordon Igesung/ Gavin Hunt a job and Bells! On a serious note- the national team needs someone who is very experienced and understands SA football. These men have done wonders for this country and I hope politics haven't found a way into SAFA premises. I know that success at team level does not necessarily mean success at national level but I am saying that these guys are the best we have so far. I am against a foreign coach

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-02-23 16:54

Gordon Igesung!!!! I know I am from Cape Town, but I like the man's style. Thank you siyat.bonanza. Now I do not sound bias.

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-02-24 08:40

Maybe Hunt, I am not sure about Gordon style of play, boring to me

      bngqumeya - 2012-02-24 09:03

Hunt won the league 3 times with Pitso's players, did he rely on SA strikers to do that?

  • Siphelele - 2012-02-23 16:23

This guy is useless, is that the best squad in the country? where is David Somma? Where are the english based on-form youngsters, this man has no vision and we are going to be slaughtered if Senegal brings a strong side to south africa.

      bngqumeya - 2012-02-24 09:04

Which players will be your starting 11?

  • Sam - 2012-02-23 19:13

very good you took a step at a right direction but you forgot to resign

  • bngqumeya - 2012-02-24 08:56

Am not happy with the way things are going in our Bafana Bafana, firing Pitso is not an option, besides his temper he is a good coach, can we give him strikers as good as Benny and Nomvete, if our guys are missing goal scoring chances can we really sat it's because Pitso is the coach? No. Pitso has to use SA players, if our players are not scoring n missing chances at their teams where they train every week in n out, how is Pitso or any "experienced" coach going to work a miracle in say 4 days. I think Pitso shud call up Nomvete and Benny

  • Derek - 2012-02-28 19:46

Could we please have a 'Football' team that represents the country and not a socca team that has been an embarrassment, Please start with a proper coach and lets get South Africa back to where we should be - Top of Africa and in the top 10 in the world where our potential lies. Come on guys. time to wake up. From DrK
