Mosimane axes Bafana captain

2011-03-15 12:04

Johannesburg - Pitso Mosimane has recalled Katlego Mphela and Kagisho Dikgacoi to the Bafana Bafana squad that will tackle Egypt.

The crucial African Nations Cup qualifier will be played at Ellis Park on March 26 and with the duo both enjoying regular game time, their selection comes as no surprise.

The South Africa boss named a squad of 24 and revealed a further eight players were included 'for observation'.

Perhaps the most shocking finding was that Aaron Mokoena was again left out of the squad as he struggles to cement a regular starting spot for Portsmouth.

BidVest Wits attacking midfielder Sifiso Myeni has earned another call-up following some sensational performances for the club in recent fixtures.

He could be one of players Mosimane merely wants to have a look at, but the Bafana boss will have a selection headache in the centre of the park and upfront.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane,Thanduyise Khuboni, Andile Jali and Kagisho Dikgacoi, who are all on form, will be jostling for a place in central midfield.

Davide Somma and Mphela form part of the same squad for the first time and Mosimane was coy on how he would make use of the target men.

The local-based players will assemble for camp on 16 March, with the overseas-placed stars joining them on March 20.

Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns), Darren Keet (Bidvest Wits).

Defenders: Siboniso Gaxa (Lierse SK, Belgium), Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Anele Ngcongca (Genk, Belgium), Siyabonga Sangweni, Mzivukile Tom (both Golden Arrows), Bongani Khumalo (Tottenham Hotspur, England), Rueben Cloete (Orlando Pirates).

Midfielders: Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane (both Kaizer Chiefs), Sifiso Myeni (Bidvest Wits), Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Steven Pienaar (Tottenham Hotspur), Andile Jali, Tlou Segolela (Orlando Pirates), Daylon Claasen (Lierse SK, Belgium), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Fulham, England), Thulani Serero (Ajax Cape Town)

Strikers: Davide Somma (Leeds United, England), Bernard Parker (Panserraikos), Kermit Erasmus (SuperSport United), Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns)

  • Kubes - 2011-03-15 12:26

    Why no quotas?

  • Only Truth - 2011-03-15 12:36

And where's Matthew Pattison???? Once and for all truth must be told. How the hell do we expect transformation to take place in other sporting codes like Rugby and Cricket, whereas when it comes to soccer we want to make it an All Blacks affair. Nowadays even coloureds are no longer good enough for Bafana Bafana, what the hell is going on? If to qualify for a place in the national teams is purely on merit, then Butana Khompela must stop this rubbish of him always calling on Saru to include players of colour in the Springbok's lineup.

      Dave - 2011-03-15 12:49

The squad has 3 whites and 5 coloureds, what are you on about? - 2011-03-15 13:12

@ Only Lies: Did you look at the full squad or did you just shout out rubbish from your mouth after you came from giving yourself a hand job? The squad is reflective of the dermographics of the country chosen on merit, something that cannot be said for other sporting codes like cricket and rugby.

      Dango - 2011-03-15 13:13

I think Pitso seems a reasonable enough guy to include the guys based on merit, I think it's a fair squad. And I think the players of colour incl in our cricket and rugga teams are also there on merit (Duminy, Lopsy, Amla, Beast). Some ppl will always push for more quotas but ultimately the experts/selectors know it doesn't work if it's not based on merit.

      Currie_Mafia - 2011-03-15 13:17

      dont worry, be happy :)

      Michael - 2011-03-15 13:43

You lost it @only truth. Quotas were instituted to redress previous imbalances where players were excuded because of the color of their skin. Were white players ever excuded from soccer because of skin colour?

  • Cedrick - 2011-03-15 12:46

No matter how bab is the situation with the Egyptians, i do not see bafana bafana through here with this kind of squard.

      traedani - 2011-03-15 14:07

Come back here on the 27th and repeat what you are saying......

  • shandycop - 2011-03-15 13:01

AWEH Somma & Killer! I say I like it, I think Pitso was a great choice. And Dicagoi & Pienaar in midfield...look forward to the game. I always though Aaron was a nice guy, cheers old chap!

  • Currie_Mafia - 2011-03-15 13:02

Pitso, you're a genius...Aaron Mokoena must never ever wear a Bafana jersy, otherwise I'll burn mine... Bongani Khumalo for Captain..

      Mamaile - 2011-03-15 13:21

      u forget Stephen pienaar chief!!!

      Currie_Mafia - 2011-03-15 14:00

Pienaar has enough on his plate as a play maker. I think Khumalo is the right man for captaincy especially as we look at the future.

  • Mzansisoka - 2011-03-15 13:20

Good team, but Kermit Erasmus is useless...

      traedani - 2011-03-15 14:09

Have you even watched him play??? Yes he misses a lot of chances but he always converts at the end.....If not him...tell me who should have been selected ???

  • Mamaile - 2011-03-15 13:20

aaron Mokoena 's axing as both bafana bafana captain and the team member is long long overdue. it has caused us dearly, losing unnecessarily. well done pitso for being brave and forget about the so called 100 and so forth caps that does not be converted in to the current playin set up. I am supporting u 100 %. we will do without AAron. well done

  • Ntsikei - 2011-03-15 13:24

At last! wish he did this B4 world cup 2010..........

  • Eugene Mbatha - 2011-03-15 13:27

Where is Tshepo masilela, big mistake again pitso

  • Kaapie - 2011-03-15 13:46

If you aint good enough, you aint good enough

  • tortello - 2011-03-15 14:10

Excellent choice of personnel, though would have loved it to see Pattison making the cut but anyhow the players selected are pure quality and class. Good luck.

  • traedani - 2011-03-15 14:10

This is what we call a "young" team.....goodluck to them...they certainly do have what it takes.....

  • ShabirS - 2011-03-15 14:52

    1. Khune 2. Ngcongca 3. Tom 4. Gould 5. Khumalo 6. Jali 7. Pienaar 8. Khubhoni 9. Tshabalala 10 Serero 11 Killer Reserves : Sandilands, Gaxa, Sangwani, Yeye, Claasen, Somma

  • nnete feela - 2011-03-16 08:39

this is really a great squad Pitso. also thank you for resting Teko. he is a great player but he needs some time to recover his form.

  • brown_bread - 2011-03-18 14:17

Now we are talking! Although it took a while, well done Pitso. And I agree with somebody here, Mphela and Somma's combination would be amazing!
