Mosimane: No quick fix

2012-06-04 12:58

Rustenburg - Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane said South Africans must accept reality and not look for quick-fix solutions to the national team.

Mosimane lashed out at the country's neglected development structures which are affecting Bafana Bafana - and now possibly his job - after they drew 1-1 with Ethiopia in their Group A 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier in Phokeng on Sunday.

"You see, in South Africa we don't want to accept reality - things have not been going well for us since we won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations," said Mosimane.

"But we are not changing the formula.

"We have a problem but you are going the same way - we must do things right in terms of our development programmes."

South Africa is still reeling from Bafana's failure to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations as they host next year's tournament.

"We don't want to accept that the world is catching up with us," Mosimane said.

"We don't want to accept that we are not scoring goals, and don't want to accept that our development is not good."

Mosimane subtly jabbed the SA Football Association for the poor structures in place while they were still seeking more satisfactory results from the team on the field.

Mosimane felt that until there were changes made to the development formula, Bafana would continue on their downward spiral.

He made examples of how long it took Spain to dominate international soccer, and for Netherlands to be a reckoning force.

South Africa had been on a decline for over decade - and swift coaching changes at national level may not be the best solution.

"It took Spain 80 years to win the World Cup, but they had to change their programme," he said.

"What do we have? We don't change the formula yet we expect different results."

Bafana face Botswana in their second Group A fixture in Gaborone on Saturday.

  • Ashwin - 2012-06-04 13:05

"We don't want to accept that the world is catching up with us," Mosimane said. More likely, SA is not catching up with the world.

      maama.bujju - 2012-06-04 13:23

he has just known that today that the world is catching up may be he was somewhere.

  • Vincent - 2012-06-04 13:08

Fixing what? Your time is up coach. Gordon Igesund should also be given a chance. Drawing board story is played out. How many chances do you need to draw up? AA se gaat.

  • Lita - 2012-06-04 13:08

Pitso is a disgrace trying to play the blame... Guess you you will do anything to hold on to that SAFA paycheck after all it is pricey to service a Merc E63..

  • ovayo.nkisimane - 2012-06-04 13:13

Pitso must go a coach Lesotho or Swaziland, maybe there they will understand a coach who goes 10 games without a win. I don't understand why he keeps on making noise about lack of development while his job is to select the already developed players and make them play like a team... Sick and tired of his arrogance...

  • cosmas.ngwenya - 2012-06-04 13:14

Select players on merit not favouratism, jus go man, u have failed, i new this would hapen, the sooner the better.

  • lesui07 - 2012-06-04 13:15

Does Zambia has good development structures? I don't think so. Your time is up Mr Mosimane.

  • Dipzen - 2012-06-04 13:16

As usual he won't take the blame for ish! Be a man an admit your failures

  • Konapi - 2012-06-04 13:16

You better update your CV and apply for the coaching job in one of the PSL teams and leave the world that is catching on you....

  • zingolucious - 2012-06-04 13:18

I realy dont understand what Pitso is Saying, we wanna win as South African not bloody theories

  • Ziggamann - 2012-06-04 13:21

Please just go. We cant have you as coach you reek of arrogance. You dont have the credentials step aside imposter.

  • William - 2012-06-04 13:24

During those 80 years they were qualifying for world and continental cups and they won most of their international friendlies.

  • Riaan - 2012-06-04 13:27

I think the problem is more complex. Most of our players are happy to play in SA and be 'celebrities' in their own country. A lot of them don't want to push their careers and play overseas and try to improve their game. Players like Drogba, Essien left their homes to make a career in football and today they are role models and on top of their game. At the same time, we have now proper facilities and decent coaches available in SA, and the quality of football is on the up. We have many players so we can become a force in Africa again if the structures are properly implemented. I don't think Pitso is the man to take us forward. Many African teams have European coaches (e.g. Ghana), so maybe that is the way forward... I just think that if the players don't have the right attitude and passion, you will never be successful. You earn the shirt and you wear it with pride. It is something that these guys can learn from the Boks and an inspiring SA Mens hockey team who managed to qualify for the London Games the hard way...

      Riaan - 2012-06-04 13:30

And another thing, why should we always play games all over the country? Play at the real big grounds and make that venue a fortress and so intimidating for the opposition that the crowd becomes like a 12th player...

      William - 2012-06-04 13:38

I like your comment. But I don't agree with the second one. Remember we play cricket, rugby and all other sports across the country.

      Jimmy - 2012-06-04 13:58

@Riaan,I agree with all your points except the Hockey example. The hockey team got a second chance to qualify. Wait until they start getting hammered at the Olympics then you will see that their qualification was via the back-door. Sorry but some of us are realistic about sport. Bafana have little talent, you don't just pitch up in europe and the big teams hire you. Drogba and Essien you mention there are far more talented players than any Bafana player. I can even argue that if Drogba was Brazillian everyone would be saying he is the best player in the world after that Champs league final performance.

      poloyatonkim - 2012-06-04 14:16

      Well said Riaan.

      dumisani.mbatha.5 - 2012-06-05 07:11

i agree with you, on the comment that sa players are complacent abt playing locally, sometimes i pity Pitso when you look at how our playrs miss glorious scoring opportunitiies, eg Pienaar missed a sitter as well, now the question is who else do you select as the best coach in the world. If were to hire Pep today would he be able to solve the scoring problems? i doubt so. Some people have complaint about Mphela, i differ, he always delivers at the National stage, who else does so noone.

  • evans.selala - 2012-06-04 13:36

Pitso must go bak 2 supper sports,I really think we xud put Gordon Igueson,Plz safa must Do tis for The nation he's been there bt he neva dd somtn positive we wEre ranked 37 in the world b4 pitso, but now we are on 67 oh oh check dat?excuses is alwys abt formulas wt formular?

  • Jay - 2012-06-04 13:41

This Dude needs to be in Parliament! He speaks like a CLUELESS ANC Cabinet Minister! I Rest my Case! BTW, Do NOT buy an e-Tag! EVER!

  • Tsietsi - 2012-06-04 13:42

Pitso you are arrogant and running out of excuses fast. Zambia won the Afcon with the majority of their players playing in the PSL. So development my foot. You are just a failure at this level. Perreira did better with the very same players that you are using. Hamba baba. Voetsek! Vamoes! Haie Tau!

  • Provence - 2012-06-04 13:42

No quick fix to what? When he took over Bafana who doing pretty well, he is not fixing anything, he is going backwards. We need to at least see we are going forward!! This man is dreaming smokes too many long cigars.

  • Mmannyo - 2012-06-04 13:43

There is a solution pitso, field poor and hungry for success players not snobs and you will tell me but sack them after their first appearance. Couldn't even score against the Ethiopians? disgusting...

  • Mgcini Ndlovu - 2012-06-04 13:59

Pitso can't fire himself , SAFA must do it Our BEE adventure has failed so 4rm now on s Merit ! Merit ! Merit = Gordon , Gavin or foreign

  • thamsanqag - 2012-06-04 14:00

I like the fact that he's talking about \acceptance\ why doesn't he practice what he preaches and accept dat he's not able to take the team to the next level and gladly leave the reigns 4 someone who will work with what we have instead of mourning for what we don't.

Libya participated in AFCON 2012 having played their qualifying games in other countries because of the turmoil that was in Libya. Pitso and your crew are failing in our own backyard, when we go to play in Ethiopia you will be the first one to complain that 'they didn't treat us good'. How many games have Ethiopia played since 2010? For your info they were stopped from participating in world cup qualifiers yet they come here and give you a run for your money. Ill say it again the one thing we need to do is to Boycott Bafana games until they can see that we have sports close to our hearts.

  • Jimmy - 2012-06-04 14:09

Reality is that strikers have been a problem so why does SAFA not get those west african U17 to U19 players and naturalise them to play for Bafana? Springbok have Beast and Mujati from Zimbabwe, France have several players over the years from West Africa, Even Germany, the USA does it naturally, Switzerland have done it, England(in all sports) so what's so special about Bafana that they can't use this formula? BTW it has worked in all the countries who have tried it.

      William - 2012-06-04 19:31

Before they employ foreign nationals I feel that they should give other local players including white players a chance first. We have enough talented players, its because they don't want to transform the team that is why we fail to win games.

  • VaMbozha - 2012-06-04 14:10

Actually we are about to change the fire you!

  • zmvulane - 2012-06-04 14:11

The QUICKEST FIX right now is to fire his s!

  • James - 2012-06-04 14:14

The quick fix is a new coach. Nobody liked Troussier but he got results here and with other international sides. Someone like him who tolerates no nonesense could work wonders. Many of the players have inflated ideas as to their ability. They need shaking up and realise that to stay in the squad one has to perform. There's a lot of potential there but someone has to crack the whip.

  • poloyatonkim - 2012-06-04 14:17

    Pitso just leave man...

  • jeffrey.mnisi - 2012-06-04 14:21

Coward, leave and save SA football. what formula are talking about, its theorem or algebra. your starting formula sucks.

  • Tefrayard - 2012-06-04 14:25

    Pitso is insane.

  • evans.selala - 2012-06-04 14:27

Is only in south africa were the coach retain its coaching after failing 2 qualify...

  • mapudieric.morakiwamachacha - 2012-06-04 14:29

  • BenedictMoh - 2012-06-04 14:34

Coach you have failed the nation just do the honourable thing and throw in the towel. You always have excuses for your failures!!!

  • BenedictMoh - 2012-06-04 14:37

Tired of your lousy excuses SAFA must do the right thing and fire you

  • evans.selala - 2012-06-04 14:38

  • rekgonne - 2012-06-04 14:46

Oh pls pitso y r u failling 2 admit that u failled the nation,if all along u knew that bafana is a downfall y da hell dd u take the job. Jst bloody quit man nxa!

  • themba.ntuli - 2012-06-04 14:47

I think good pitso must go he is one of the most arrogant and self-estemed coaches i have ever seen really!! the only difference between him and mourinho is that the latter does win games, you can see how this indivisuals conduct interviews they don't want to admit defeat, its either the ref or that to blame not them.

  • Lawrence - 2012-06-04 14:48

Pitso was never international material. Please hire Gordon or Jomo.

  • rboy24 - 2012-06-04 14:54

Main Problem: All sports in SA have racial issues , Rugby and Soccer !!!!!! Soccer dominated by Blacks, Rugby dominated by Whites.

  • Lawrence - 2012-06-04 15:00

Benni McCarthy told you so: Pitso is bias. Pitso doesn't know football. Pitso is a slow learner. Pitso is arrogant. Pitso doesn't know the SA public is his clientele. Pitso must go back to school.

  • Lawrence - 2012-06-04 15:01

"We don't want to accept that the world is catching up with us," Mosimane said: WTF is he having a piss? Catching up with US?? Nobody aspires to be like us, coz we have not won anything except the 1996 AFCON. Sometimes when this guy speaks, its like his brain is playing tricks on his mouth. Gibberish, utter nonsense. He made the guys dance knowing very well that we didint qualify and asked us what the rules are?? Is it not part of his JOB? Clueless fat idiot!! You should have complained about all of this when you took the job. Better yet, you should have refused to take the job because of what you are saying. But NOooo, you didnt because you wanted to line your pockets. Ethopia does not have any formula better than ours nor the players we have but they still played better than us. Move over fat Albert, bring in the slim and fit Gordon or Gavin Hunt!! Tired of this pathetic fool and those SAFA egotistical idiots!

  • tsietsi.koza - 2012-06-04 15:02

  • festivalj - 2012-06-04 15:17

Don't start by bringing your opinions of complains you do not have the skills and you cant coach just go back to your drawing book to start afresh you will apply after 25 years again, this National Team is not your and these guy are killing their skills because of you ,and stop referring our squad to other countries this guys they can play. this is SOUTH AFRICA we can play just Step Away from soccer you cant do it and cant coach just walk away we wont Remember you go back where you come from and take your starkness of bad coaching to other clubs not here on Bafana Bafana you have been paid for nothing its fine all coaches are winners but Just go don't look back

  • Elyaas - 2012-06-04 15:18

Pitso u r delusional...u need to catch up with the rest of the world and not the world with u...i hope safa fires u. The amajitas can push brazil all the way in athlone proves our youth can compete.
