Modise: Bafana were better

2011-09-06 07:39

Johannesburg - Teko Modise believes South Africa were the better team in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Niger in their crucial 2012 AFCON qualifier in Niamey.

Niger, who now top Group G with nine points, prevailed through goals on either side of the beak from Dankwa E Kofi and Ouwa Moussa Maazou, while Andile Jali was on target for the visitors.

The defeat - Bafana Bafana's first of the campaign - leaves them a point behind Mena with the final round of matches to play.

"They did not play any better than us but they found those two chances and scored," said Modise, who struck the woodwork at the General Seyni Koutche Stadium.

"I really feel that we were unfortunate to be on the losing side, especially having created more chances, but that is how football goes sometimes."

Bafana now need to beat Sierra Leone at home next month and hope that Egypt, who fielded an experimental side in Saturday's loss to the Leone Stars, either draw or defeat Niger in Cairo.

So how many points do you get because you think your team were better ?

      Popza - 2011-09-06 08:18

Bob, I don't think he thought about that before he gave this stupid answer....

      farmworker - 2011-09-06 09:18

An Modise should know better that the game of football is about scoring goals nothing more, I gave up on this Bafanas going to AFCON, I am a Khosi Fan

Teko you are a spent force so why your comments now. Not sure why Pisto keeps you in the side. I have seen games where a side has much more of the ball of the game and still lose you did not deliver so dont complain

    Were not !

  • Shonny - 2011-09-06 08:09

'Teko Modise believes South Africa were the better team ' !!! so why they lost !!!. So non-logical.

  • Smtmz - 2011-09-06 08:47

What I don't understand is that this is the first official match that this team has lost since Pitso took over. The only other loss was the 1-0 suffered at the hands of USA last year. This team hadn't conceded a single goal in the qualifiers before the Niger game. All of a sudden it is labelled a bad good-for-nothing team? After a single loss? Does that make sense?

      farmworker - 2011-09-06 09:30

@Smtmz if I was you I would not defend this Arrogant Pitso Guys, now he says Niger would not emerge from Cairo as winners. I mean that is how teams do, Egypt have nothing to play for and no one can blame them if they send the under 23 team. The fact is this should have been the game where we sealed our qualification, but guess the reality is that we are not going to AFCON

      Smtmz - 2011-09-06 13:48

@farmworker, if his only crime is that he is arrogant then I will defend him. Fact is, this is not a bad team. It is by no means a great team, but they are improving. If you want a bad team then think back to Santana's era.

      1stcase - 2011-09-06 14:57

Should Niger win Egypt, it would not matter how many goals we conceded or how many chances we created NIGER would be the best team from our group. Should this happen, hopefully not, then Mr. arrogant PITSO have failed.

I believe him, Bafana have been playing impressive football lately, I suppose luck(or lack thereof) is part of the game. Hard luck Bafana, true supporters and lovers of football appreciates the efforts.

      Jason - 2011-09-06 13:40

I ask myself the same question about the South African cricket team at World Cups.

  • vambozha mutemi - 2011-09-06 11:20

  • sjkranenburg - 2011-09-06 14:56

is it any coincidence that Teko's return to the Bafana squad has lead to the team's first competitive loss under Pitso??

  • dolz - 2011-09-06 22:37
