Meyiwa gets Bafana call-up

2012-12-11 12:08

Durban - Belgium-based midfielder Ayanda Patosi and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa are the two uncapped players named in the Bafana Bafana squad to face Malawi in a friendly match in Durban next week.

Coach Gordon Igesund also included defender Siyanda Xulu, who plays his football in Russia, in the 24-man list, while Kaizer Chiefs fullback Tsepo Masilela and Orlando Pirates midfielder Daine Klate return after long absences from the national set-up.

Igesund said he would once again be using the Malawi clash to fine-tune his squad ahead of next year's Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament.

"I have been using the past five matches to look at various players and this one against Malawi is no different," Igesund said on Tuesday.

"The only difference is that this is the last chance for me and my technical team to have a final look at what we have at our disposal.

"Time for observing and assessing the players is almost over, and I believe this match will give us an indication of where we are and where we are going."

Katlego Mphela was named among a group of 12 players that will be added to the squad after the December 22 friendly at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Mamelodi Sudowns striker recently returned from a six-month spell on the sidelines due to knee surgery.

The other players that will link up with the team are Darren Keet, Eric Mathoho, Anele Ngcongca, Andile Jali, Teko Modise, Bongani Khumalo, Ricardo Nunes, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Dean Furman, Thulani Serero and Benni McCarthy.

The final 23-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations will be announced on December 30.

Meanwhile, SA Football Association (SAFA) chief executive Robin Petersen said he was pleased to be back in Durban and was looking forward to the Moses Mabhida Stadium hosting the fixture.

"It's fantastic to be back at this magnificent and world class venue that is the Moses Mabhida Stadium," Petersen said.

"As SAFA we are well aware that football has a special place in this part of the world, and it is no surprise that Bafana Bafana have always enjoyed great support in this City and the Province in general."

Bafana Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Wayne Sandilands, Senzo Meyiwa.

Defenders: Siyabonga Sangweni, Bevan Fransman, Thabo Nthethe, Thabo Matlaba, Siyanda Xulu, Tsepo Masilela, Siboniso Gaxa.

    Teko Modise is a substitute.

I think by now the coach could have had a full team that he has already selected and work on it while there is still time, this type of time consuming is the one making Bafana Bafana not to perform because the team can not gel together at a short period of time, by now a team could have been assembled and busy playing friendlies in order to sharpen itself and not to select players who will be in a final squard.

same opinion mmoledies . no time at all , be serious coach,

Eish, exactly what's wrong with SA football, someone has a few (very few) good games and then they make it into the national squad??? Before you roll your eyes, I am one of the biggest Buccaneers, one in a house full of Khosi's and I like Senzo, but he has only had a few good games, why distract him with a call-up to the national squad? As for Mphela, he was on 'injury leave' for the best part of this season and returned 2 games ago, is he fit enough to play in BB? This is starting to come across as very desperate on Igesund's side.

      frederick.kgomotso - 2012-12-11 15:14

imagine a player of mac cathy , he is coming from injury , not even fit to the starting line up at team level, he even confessed tht he is not fit at team level (after derby) . but likely to be selected for the crucial Afcon. these coaches who are not sure what they are doing like to gamble a lot , during the game you can even see from the eyes that the man is in trouble, just because pitso want rebuild the young man's lost confidence, coach jumps to conclusion that he is fine. coach stop pannicking pse, or you are stanley tshoswane's friend ? be bold man.

      cponoane - 2012-12-12 12:41

i totally agree with you on that one , i think gordon is busy digging his own grave . instead of building a team he just chops and changes it for every game . does this mean with every game we are gonna see new call ups . as for Bennie , Meyiwa , and Mphela theiir inclusion doesnt make sense at all

  • cosmas.ngwenya - 2012-12-11 13:21

good luck meyiwa, i am against mphela"s selection though

  • mzwa.chilliza - 2012-12-11 13:38

Yeah,Senzo deserves the call up,congrats to him.

  • gavin.ruiters - 2012-12-11 13:51

Not too sure why Keet is joining if we already have 3 keepers. Let him play for his club and build his career. Igesund such a fool. http://www.sport24.co.za/Soccer/BafanaBafana/Igesund-slams-Keet-coach-20121205

  • Karabo Phetoane - 2012-12-11 13:55

a player does good and is not getting a call-up we complain,a player loses form and he gets a call-up we complain.Actually what do we want as soccer fans?Since Mphela got injured no one have stood and be counted as our goal getter,Mphela is a war tested soldier he can deliver even if he is off-form because he have done that before.

  • frederick.kgomotso - 2012-12-11 15:10

coach it is getting late, this tials of every game does not make me feel comfortable, why mac cathy coz he is struggling with fitness, he even mentioned on saturday after the derby game, are you satisfying individuals ?

  • thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-12-11 15:20

Thought Tlou Sekgolela would make it. Well, perhaps not His time yet.

      lesego.dube.714 - 2012-12-12 07:39

Tlou sekgolela, will never make it!!!He is selfish and doesn't know how to play soccer!!!Igesund called-up (8)player from Chiefs,so there is no-way that Tlou will maki it!

      claiphy.khumalo - 2012-12-12 11:41

I also thought so Thabang, the guy is a great winger but his chance will come again.
