Cape Town - South African football legend Phil Masinga believes a great way for Bafana Bafana to honour the late Senzo Meyiwa is to make sure they secure a place at next year's Africa Cup of Nations.

SAFA delay squad announcement

Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa played an influential part in the national team's qualifying fixtures by keeping four clean sheets and guided theteam to the top of Group A. They now require just one more win to secure a place at next year's competition.

"After working so hard for the national team by making sure that they do not concede, it would be fitting for his teammates to give him a befitting farewell by qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations," Masinga, a former Bafana striker, told website.

"From the way that he played during those four matches, it is very clear that qualifying for this competition was a major priority for him and I am sure the rest of these players will be aware of this."

Masinga, who also played for Jomo Cosmos, Mamelodi Sundwons and Leeds United during his career, feels the footballing fraternity will take a long time to process Meyiwa's death.

"It is a sad development. Very sad." said the ex-Bafana Bafana striker.

"Senzo still had a lot of years in him. He was the captain of the national team and a football hero to many people, young and old.

"To just hear that he is dead is something that shook me.

"Away from the football pitch, he was very humble and simple.

"Why would anyone want to kill a person like this? I just do not understand this."

"The spirit of the Derby would not have been the same.

"The PSL and SAFA did the right thing.

"The proposal to also retire Meyiwa's jersey would be a gesture of respect.

"He did so much for Pirates and he deserves that honour," Masinga added.
