Mandela honoured by SAFA

Johannesburg - Ndileka Mandela, eldest granddaughter of former president Nelson Mandela, accepted a posthumous award on behalf of the Mandela family at the SA Football Association (Safa) on Saturday.

"I must say that I am truly humbled to be standing here on behalf of granddad," Mandela said after receiving the award from Minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula.

Mandela, along with former presidents Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe and FW de Klerk were honoured in Johannesburg on Saturday morning for their service and contribution to football in the country.

Mbalula also accepted an award on behalf of President Jacob Zuma, who was not in attendance. Anti-apartheid activists Ahmed Kathrada and Andrew Mlangeni, as well as human rights lawyer George Bizos were also in attendance.

Founder and chairman of club team Kaizer Chiefs, Kaizer Motaung, was honoured with an award for his services to soccer in the country.

Motaung, who turns 70 on Thursday, was wished a happy birthday by the Safa executive committee, before a cake was wheeled into the room.

Approximately 200 Safa delegates, from all regions of the country, were set to be addressed by the soccer body's president, Danny Jordaan.

He was expected to talk about considerable profits made by the association over the last financial year.
