Khune named Bafana captain

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, on Friday confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, is now the country’s permanent captain.

According to the Soccer-Laduma website, following the retirement of Steven Pienaar the Bafana captaincy was handed to Bongani Khumalo, however, once he was dropped from the squad the honour was given to the Chiefs man.

Now Igesund has confirmed that Khune is the long-term captain of South Africa, and even if he is rested against Lesotho this weekend then he will return as captain for the World Cup qualifiers after that.

At Bafana’s training at Germiston Stadium Igesund said, “Can I take this opportunity to say that Itumeleng Khune is the captain of the national team from now on, I’m not going to keep changing it. I’m very happy with his attitude and I’ve told him that I don’t want him to just be a captain, I want him to be a great captain.”

Bafana first take on Lesotho this weekend before travelling to Cameroon to take on the Central African Republic and then Addis Ababa to play Ethiopia.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
