Khomane backs Keshi, Rijkaard

Johannesburg - With less than a week to go before the new Bafana Bafana head coach is unveiled, former national team and Orlando Pirates captain Papi Khomane has given his two favourites for the role.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is set to announce the new man to take Bafana forward when the National Executive Committee (NEC) and its delegates meet at SAFA's head offices in Nasrec on Saturday.

When contacted by Sport24, Khomane said Nigeria's Stephen Keshi and former FC Barcelona mentor Frank Rijkaard would be his preferred picks.

“Keshi to me might be the perfect man for SAFA,” said Khomane.

“He is the kind of coach who delivers what he promises. He can say give me the job and I will deliver. He has done well with the Nigerian national team and all teams he led in the past.

“But my first preference will be Frank Rijkaard. I believe that as a country, we need the Dutch factor in our team. Look how they are doing at Ajax Cape Town. From their youth teams to the senior team, we can see how beneficial the Dutch are.”

In his playing days, “Skipper” managed to grab nine caps in the Bafana colours.

He was part of Trott Moloto's squad which took part in the 2000 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ghana and Nigeria where Bafana finished third.

It remains to be seen who will succeed Gordon Igesund in the managerial role for the national team.
