Igesund names Bafana squad

2012-10-02 13:26

Johannesburg -  Coach Gordon Igesund has named his travelling Bafana Bafana squad that will be playing in two international friendlies later this month. Igesund named a 26-man squad that will face Poland on October 12 and Kenya on October 16.

The squad was announced on Tuesday at SAFA House in Nasrec, Johannesburg, where a number of changes were made to the squad that took on Brazil and Mozambique last month.

Teko Modise, who was left out of last month’s squad, has been called-up to the team while in-form Maritzburg United midfielder, Delron Buckley, has been re-called to the national set-up. The 34-year-old is arguably the most experienced squad member and will undoubtedly bring stability to the squad.

Following Steven Pienaar’s retirement from international football, the team’s midfield will be reengineered, although the Everton man was not part of last month’s squad that defeated Mozambique 2-0, after losing 1-0 to Brazil.

The team will be leaving for Poland on October 8 and will arrive in Warsaw, via Zurich, on October 9. Following the game on Friday, October 12, the team will leave for Nairobi on the morning of October 13, ahead of the clash with the Kenyans.

Coach Gordon Igesund’s travelling squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates)

Defenders: Thabo Nthethe (Bloemfontein Celtic), Luvhengo Mungomeni (Moroka Swallows), Punch Masenamela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Ricardo Nunes (MSK Zilina) (Slovakia), Bongani Khumalo (PAOK) (Greece) - captain, Siyabonga Sangweni (Orlando Pirates), Erick Mathoho (Kaizer Chiefs), Bevan Fransman (SuperSport United)

Midfielders: Teko Modise (Mamelodi Sundowns), Lerato Chabangu (Moroka Swallows), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Delron Buckley (Maritzburg United), May Mahlangu (Helsingborg IF) (Sweden), Dean Furman (Oldham Athletic) (England), Oupa Manyisa (Orlando Pirates), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Crystal Palace) (England), Sifiso Myeni (Orlando Pirates), Katlego Mashego (Free State Stars), George Lebese (Kaizer Chiefs)

Strikers: Bernard Parker (Kaizer Chiefs), Dino Ndlovu (Maccabi Haifa) (Israel), Tokelo Rantie (Malmo FF) (Sweden)

this is purely based on form which is good....but why only 3 strikers?

      mcebiseni.khumalo - 2012-10-02 14:35

Mapholoba, i think it's because we got midfielders that plays nice attacking football. They can actually do the strikers job.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-02 14:45

Ja dieter. With some "boxes"(think Afrikaans name) like you one can just do nothing with. What is wrong with you? You now insulting a SA team and not the Aussies or some other foreign national team.

Teko Modise kuhle ukuba echongiwe kulo umjikelo.Bendizibuza ukuba kutheni uTeko engafakwanga nje kwela qela lokuqala lika Gordon

Modise's call up is the more effective one, I hope he delivers in Poland. I really see no need for the Orlando Pirates player Manyisa in the team when you have Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Dean Furman, the coach should have just got a fourht striker instead.

I think he should have left Yeye alone, or he must not play him. I am worried that he got injured over the weekend and I can't stand to lose Yeye for the remainder of a league games. Remember he was out for the rest of last season and I believe if he was not injured we could have probably done better or even win the league

Am now impressed with Bafana Bafana squad, this is what we call selecting players based on current form. M happy for Luvhengo Mungomeni and Delron Buckley and for the future I would like to see the on form Moroka Swallows duo Bennet Chenene and Katlego Mashego being re-called to the national team. Thank you Gordon, now you have my full support.
