Igesund named Bafana coach

2012-06-30 16:57

Johannesburg - Gordon Igesund was named as the new Bafana Bafana coach on Saturday.

Igesund was appointed ahead of fellow South African Steve Komphela, the SA Football Association announced.

The duo were the only two candidates left in the race to find a replacement for Pitso Mosimane who was sacked on June 5 after a string of poor results.

"It was not an easy decision as both coaches are well equipped to take Bafana Bafana forward," said SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani.

"At the end of the day, it was a unanimous decision (by the SAFA national executive committee) and we think the final verdict was in the best interest of the nation."

Safa said in a statement that Igesund had been offered a two-year contract with a mandate to reach at least the semi-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted by South Africa.

He was also expected to successfully guide the team through the 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifiers and earn a place in the tournament in Brazil.

Igesund, 55, is the only man to have won the Premier Soccer League title with four different clubs.

He completed a remarkable turnaround with Moroka Swallows this year.

After helping the Birds escape relegation in the 2010/11 campaign, Igesund guided them to second place in the championship race this past season.

Nematandani appealed to the public and the media to support Igesund in his new role and not judge him on upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Poland, both of which will be played away from home.

"The bigger picture is the 2013 Afcon tournament and qualifying us for the Brazil 2014 World Cup," he said.

    go bafana go south africa

      len.anderson.90 - 2012-06-30 17:24

@Jose. No coach has full control of the players the world over and it has been like that for all coaches here in South Africa and elsewhere.

      Bulls - 2012-06-30 17:46

As long as he is a South African, I welcome the move. He will have the best interest of his country at heart.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-30 19:04

THIS IS GREAT !!! Now that we have more representation in SA Soccer, and our football seems to be TRANSFORMING to embrace a multi-racial South Africa, now maybe, we can start winning a few games.

  • juanita.vanrooyen.98 - 2012-06-30 17:12

Maybe if Moses led Bafana Bafana they would reach semi-final of AFCON! BB r only playing bcz tournament is to b held in SA

Mike: that comment was not necessary mate.

  • stanley.millar7 - 2012-06-30 17:13

its about damn time. just hope he has full control of selection and everything.

      len.anderson.90 - 2012-06-30 17:22

Unlike cricket and rugby, the Bafana Bafana coach is the sole selector. The idea that any Bafana coach has ever been told who to pick is preposterous and is only made by those ignorant of what happens in SAFA. The one player that got a coach to be fired when he refused to pick him was Bennie McCarthy. Barker refused to select McCarthy and was eventually fired when results were not as good as anticipated.

  • Bantu Holomisa - 2012-06-30 17:15

Long overdue! Congratulations. Best decision by SAFA.

      bmsiziba - 2012-06-30 19:14

I second yo comment ! Wel done SAFA

  • Linky Moralo - 2012-06-30 17:16

I hope performance based contract won't just be applied to him but rather to every coach who will ever coach Bafana in future!

  • juanita.vanrooyen.98 - 2012-06-30 17:17

Maybe if Moses were 2 lead Bafana Bafana they wd reach semi-final of AFCON! BB r only playing bcz SA is host

  • JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-30 17:26

      slick.hounder - 2012-06-30 17:41

And you know this Biza, you IDIOT! He can choose who ever he wants and he will so why do you believe it will be the same useless players??

      matvee111 - 2012-06-30 17:59

u might wana google this ouk...but 2 enlighten u a bit,he recently took a useless swallows team that had no following & at sum point avoiding relegation to title contenders, he's the most successful PSL coach...he'll elevate Bafana,js watch

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-30 18:09

So because you disagree with my opinion about a soccer team, you think you are entitled to use labels like 'idiot? Do you see any SA players that could win a tournament?

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-30 18:12

@Marltvee. Parreira had won a world cup but still couldn't make our team turn into talent players

      slick.hounder - 2012-06-30 19:32

awe go cry to someone who cares ....child!

  • slick.hounder - 2012-06-30 17:34

Well done Gordie..... you deserve some recognition for what you have put back in soccer in the RSA! Sad thing is and I hope I am forever wrong... I hope you have NOT got the position so you can be "SLAYED AND DEMONIZED" by supporters, especially racially, if you cannot manage to turn around nothing but a dysfunctional team of losers.... a team/squad hell bent on self glorification and financial self greed that nothing else matters to them for so long..... Enjoy your time in charge and never forget your roots.... if they dis respect you, kick those that do out immediately... reputations mean NOTHING in a continual losing team...... or any team for that matter, no matter what sport! Respect and the right to play is earned ,never taken for granted... and NO ONE IS BETTER OR BIGGER THAN THE GAME ITSELF, ^5s good friend,, catch u pitch side soon ...^5s

  • lodewyk.fred - 2012-06-30 17:36

  • peter.t.solomon - 2012-06-30 17:55

Very good news! He deserved it. And he won't disappoint.

  • thulani.zondi.7 - 2012-06-30 17:58

Igesund is best choice but the fans must give him support in order for him to succeed. The safa head honcho s must not interfere with his coaching work. Let the coach choose his own players and let him choose his own technical team to assist him. Release all the Brazilians. Thank you. Good luck Gordon.

  • jonathan.jooste - 2012-06-30 18:02

      luvontezo - 2012-06-30 18:12

No offence to your opinion sir,as a black person,I don't see this appointment as a race issue but a very relevant issue as Gordon is ye best man manager and the whole country needs him.Pitso didn't fail as a black manager,he failed because he lacked the skill. This is the best appointment since Clive Barker.Let's all support this noble chap and wish him well in his post.

      colin.dovey - 2012-06-30 18:16

His RACE was NEVER the issue - get back in your Box - we need this type of unbiased choice to UNIT our country again!!!

      slick.hounder - 2012-06-30 19:41

Another Racist basturd...... why NO indians in any decent soccer team ??? you wanna know why??? Cause you dont have the gonads to front up in any physical sports..... now go count curry leaves for catch da shads... cause thats all you good for..... "spice man"

      thahir.asmal - 2012-06-30 23:44

Ignorant comment from an ignorant human being. It's a sad day for Indians when one oblivious individual from amongst us thinks like an idiot. It’s not about the colour of the players, but the quality. We have an abundance of natural talent in SA, but do not nurture it. Instead we spend hours in boardrooms fighting over the wrong things, in all sports! Let us get behind Gordon and build a great team with the likes of Mathoho, Jali, May and Rantie.

  • Julia - 2012-06-30 18:16

this is the best decision ever made be SAFA. I was going to protest if he was not appointed. The man anointed by God.

  • jlushaba - 2012-06-30 18:20

      stfaith.esau - 2012-06-30 20:40

Yes, he must be allowed to build his own team there are a lot of talented players that could be given a chance.

  • zwelakhegeorge.myeza - 2012-06-30 18:44

Great stuff, Igesund is indeed one of the best coaches in SA but it is a little unfair to just expect him to reach the semi final of the AFCON. To qualify the team for the world cup in Brasil is a must to prove his capabilities of which we would rate him much higher than we do presently.

  • mthetheleli.ntshobololo.1 - 2012-06-30 18:48

waiting is finaly over, he is a good coach, lets see how far he can go. coaching clowns is not going to be easy. he's going 2 compete with the best teams in the world not GUATEMALA(whtever that means) HE MUST BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS!!!!

  • mpho.c.moreki - 2012-06-30 18:48
