Cape Town – Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has lauded the "fantastic" job done by Bafana Bafana following their successful qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Player ratings: Bafana v Sudan
This past weekend saw South Africa guarantee themselves top spot in Group A after the 2-1 win over Sudan in Durban left them with an unassailable four-point lead over second-placed Nigeria with one game remaining.
That marked Bafana's first successful qualification campaign since 2008, with the side having failed to reach both the 2010 and 2012 editions of AFCON, while they also missed out on a place at the 2014 World Cup finals.
Carlos Alberto Parreira, Joel Santana, Pitso Mosimane and Gordon Igesund are just some of the former Bafana coaches who stumbled during that time, and Hunt believes that shows just how well new boss Shakes Mashaba has done since his appointment earlier this year.
“I think they have been fantastic," Hunt told Football411.
“They are doing tremendously well and I wish him [Shakes Mashaba] all the best.
“The players have done something they should really be proud of. Good luck to them.”
Bafana close out the 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign against Nigeria at the Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo on Wednesday, where Steven Keshi’s men need only match Congo's result against Sudan in Group A's other final fixture to ensure they are present to defend the continental crown they won in South Africa two years ago.
Kick-off at 19:00.
