Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, says that he will have no qualms if Kaizer Chiefs, or any other team, choose to withdraw players from his COSAFA squad.
According to the Soccer-Laduma website, despite reports in the media that Chiefs would not be releasing any of their players for the tournament in Zambia next month, Igesund went on to name five Amakhosi men in his squad.
The national team head coach explained that he had a conversation with Chiefs’ chairman, Kaizer Motaung, last month, when he was informed that the players would be released if he wanted them.
However, following Bobby Motaung’s comments in the media saying that he will not be allowing any of his players to leave, it has been thrown into doubt whether Tefu Mashamaite, Erick Mathoho, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker will make the trip.
Igesund says that he hopes to have the players available, but if they are not, then the player’s clubs have the right not to release their charges.
He said, “It’s not a FIFA date, so if any teams want to withdraw their players then they can withdraw their players. It’s their right. If players are withdrawn I have backups in mind.”
Bafana’s first game at the tournament will take place on July 13, although their opponents have not been confirmed yet, with Igesund’s men taking on the eventual winners of Group A.
