'Benni deserved Bafana spot'

Johannesburg - Veteran striker Benni McCarthy should have been included in South Africa's 27-man squad for three international matches next month, according to Orlando Pirates caretaker coach Augusto Palacios.

Palacios said on Thursday he believed McCarthy would have added value to the national outfit for crucial 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and Botswana and a friendly game against Gabon in June.

"Benni might have had his differences with SAFA [the SA Football Association] and Bafana administrations in the past," Palacios said.

"But he has been a reformed character while playing for Pirates this season and I have found him a model player who is disciplined and working hard in training."

The Pirates coach said McCarthy was a gifted, natural footballer with a talent for scoring.

And though he might have lost a yard or two in pace since his halcyon years with Porto and early days with Blackburn Rovers, his experience and insight could be valuable assets in securing the vital goals that have been lacking from Bafana in recent times.

"It is all very well saying Bafana must look for players for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, but first you have to get there," Palacios said.

"Benni has shown with some sensational goals for Pirates that he could be instrumental in achieving this.

"I have known Benni well since he made a sensational debut for Bafana in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations. I was the team's general manager then.

"While he might be a bit of an enigma at times, there is a way of getting the best out of him.

"It's not for nothing that he is Bafana's all-time top scorer."

Bafana squad:

Itumeleng Khune, Moeneeb Josephs, Wayne Sandilands, Darren Keet

Punch Masenamela, Tsepo Masilela, Eric Mathoho, Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould, Siyabonga Sangweni, Bongani Khumalo, Anele Ngcongca

Mr Palacious...OMG please get serious,we as the country thought you guys will focus on the longrun and the future of the National team and now you come up with this suggestions...can you tell me when will the younger players get exposure,Benni is good but he has serve his term, give a chance to other players,we sitting with Isaacs,Somma,Manqhele,Rodgers,Mphela,Majoro, you name them and you recommend Benni, then Nomvethe would been the much better one because of his composure...get real please if you want to see Bafana's progression

      Gladstone - 2012-05-17 22:32

@chengb... If you don't need McCarthy because of his age, then why the likes Nomvethes are okay?

They also need to give Gordon Igesund a chance at being the Bafana Coach

  • Gladstone - 2012-05-17 22:41

I wouldn't agree with you more Coach. The combination of Nomvethe and Benni can pave the way to WC 2014. And these young guys can learn something. It is a fact that Bafana Bafana are in need of strikers.

This is absolutely bull Sh*t...he deserves a space fo what? Palacious wants a media it because he scored 2 goals against Chiefs?....South African soccer is a joke

      Godfrey - 2012-05-18 07:26

I think Pitso must swallow his pride and call him,his not just a striker, his a model to most of players on the pitch..Pitso must Swallow his pride Finish n Klaar.

  • Cosmas - 2012-05-18 09:31

Benni is by far better than these mphelas, u cn say watever u want bcoz u follow a family business bt, the majority of these young players clearly lack direction, composure and tactical ability in their type of play......bafana will always lose with thse players. Benni has even scored more goals this season, sensational ones for that matter, than all those strikers tht u think can play better, save for nomvethe...dont even mention mphela, the guy has jus lost his touch

  • Thapelo - 2012-05-20 04:43

I totally agree with Palacois, need experience in this type of tournament, not just to add bafana's caps on ur cv..... This youngsters need a mentor n direction, thats just y we need Bennie, like it or not.
