Cape Town - South Africa and Nigeria will renew their rivalry and meet for a 12th time when they clash in an international friendly at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 15:00.

The Super Eagles have generally been a nemesis for Bafana Bafana, who have managed just one win against the West African giants in 11 previous meetings - that lone victory arrived in a friendly in Johannesburg over a decade ago (2-1 in November 2004).

Aside from that success, there have three draws and a full seven victories for Nigeria, who have definitely dominated the rivalry. The Super Eagles’ 4-0 victory over South Africa in the teams’ very first meeting, a 1994 World Cup qualifier, set the tone for much of what has followed since.

However, Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana Bafana twice held the Nigerians to draws in qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in September and November last year.

The results helped to eliminate Nigeria from the competition in the preliminary stages and brought their reign as African champs to a premature end.

Furthermore, South Africa was the better team in both matches, particularly a 2-2 draw in Uyo (the teams’ most recent meeting) where two goals from Tokelo Rantie had put Mashaba’s side on course for a first ever competitive win over the Super Eagles, but the hosts fought back through a brace from Sone Aluko to claim a share of the spoils.
