According to Soccer Laduma, says that the belief Shakes Mashaba has in him to hand him a call-up “means a lot”.

“That's one thing I've always dreamed of as a football player, and I have always been proud when I was summoned to the U-national team. So it's a great honour to be invited to a national team,” said Phiri.

“I had actually assumed that I was going to play solid here in Brondby for a long time before I got a chance in the national team. It has not been the case, but I have started well in the spring season, and it has apparently convinced the coach.

“I actually read it in a South African newspaper. It was a huge surprise, and it was great to see my name among other big names. I figured that I would play on the U23 team, which will be published next week, so it came as a big surprise.”

Bafana Bafana are set to play on Wednesday, March 25 against Swaziland (19:00 kick-off) before hosting Nigeria at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, March 29 (15:00 kick-off).
