Cape Town - Bafana Bafana legend, David Nyathi, has lashed out at national team coach, Shakes Mashaba, saying he should stop making promises if he cannot deliver.
“I think Shakes is failing the country and should watch what he says to the media because he is failing to deliver what he has promised,” Nyathi told Sport24.
“He has put himself under tremendous pressure because of his remarks, which he was not supposed to have made.”
Nyathi said the country deserves better and Mashaba should be reminded what his priorities, objectives and targets are as the national team coach.
“The whole situation is very sad for the country and our football because I feel that he has a very good team,” said Nyathi.
“Things did not go as we thought in the COSAFA Cup which was to be used as the stepping stone to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and we put that to rest as he was complaining about the unavailability of players.
“But I think he is now failing this country. We have amazing talent of players and we are also not short of resources that I feel struggling to beat countries like Gambia is bad for our football.”
The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner said Mashaba has failed to take responsibility for the team’s shortcomings and is instead contradicting himself in the media.
“The national team is all about the country and I think Shakes is disappointing us. For me it’s very bad that people still talk about the 1996 class when we should have already re-written those history books,” said Nyathi.
