Bafana slide in FIFA rankings

2011-06-29 11:26

Johannesburg - The South African football team have fallen nine positions in the latest FIFA world rankings.

After climbing to 38th place in May - the team's highest ranking since 2004 - Bafana Bafana fell to 47th in the rankings released on Wednesday.

Despite the drop, South Africa remain unbeaten this year, having won three of their four matches in 2011.

They have lost only one game since last year's FIFA World Cup, going down 1-0 to the United States in Cape Town in November.

For a team that has only lost once in a year, its quite wierd that they are dropping down the rankings...i mean they have won 3 of the last 4 games. Now iv really given up on understanding FIFA

      donkerhond - 2011-07-01 15:19

It also actually depend on who they play. Not losing a game, but when you win against teams that couldn't even qualify for any major tournaments... Kind of sounds like SBW's boxing career..

  • motsokwane - 2011-06-29 12:19

You can't play soccer with Zimbabwe,Pakistan and Iraq and then expect to be given credit.

      Bosj - 2011-06-29 12:27

Motsokwane, please enlighten us here. SA beat Egypt (no. 1 in continent, Drew with Egypt, beat Niger, drew with Sierra Lione). We did not play Zim, pakistan or iraq (or do you perhaps refer to cricket?). I don't understand how Engalnd can be ranked higher than Brazil....

      ME - 2011-06-29 13:42

??? Please share with us the dates when these games took place. The last time I checked Egypt was the top country in the continent. We will assume you are joking, not dumb and ignorant as your comment sounds.

      Daffy - 2011-06-29 13:58

@ME, where have you been? Egypt has not been number 1 in Africa for a long time, geez dude, check your facts before you embarass yourself like this. you such a fool

  • scott - 2011-06-29 12:34

we beat freaking niger, kenya etc. and expect to jump the rankings . . . a predominantly black team has sucked over the last 10 years-what have we achieved? 96 all the vit ous did it for the team . . .

      Bosj - 2011-06-29 12:40

Dear Scott. We are querying the FIFA rankings, we are not talking politics. There are other platforms for your racial spews bro. This is sport commentary that we are looking for. Please enlighten us on this sport topic.

      flowing river - 2011-06-29 13:17

@scottie......Suppose u vit ous r now gonna start blaming our ou Malema for this....!

      Thunukenenxe - 2011-06-29 13:20

@Scott We have won all trophies that were won by white cricket national team after 1999.

    FIFA is confused and corrupt

  • Nyan - 2011-06-29 12:51

Strange call from FIFA, has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

  • Capey - 2011-06-29 13:13

It is quite simple. Bafana have not actually slipped - some teams below us climbed after wins - thats it! Whats the confusion. And the guys with the racist comments can jam it - Bafana are on the way up. Remember, we beat France in the world cup, we have been climbing the rankings since then.

      mpho30 - 2011-06-29 14:10

I get what you are saying, but this confuses me. How come Egypt jumped 2 places ahead when they drew with us (who were ranked below them)? How come Nigeria didn't shoot up as they beat Argentina? Bafana Played 2 matches within the ranking month (1 win and 1 draw) and Egypt played 1(draw), how are we not above them? I think this Fifa point system should be reviewed.

  • Aar - 2011-06-29 13:20

its very easy to see that ranking system is flawed!!!!!!all the haters out there with the stupid sarcastic comments, do you really think england is the fourth best team in the world!!!!!!

  • peter the gr - 2011-06-29 13:28

Well, winning is good.... but against who?? Against NO HOPPERS!! The only win against Lesotho or Swaziland and maybe Botswana on a good day, after that . . . . its the end of the road!!!

  • silverflash - 2011-06-29 13:37

all u guys need to go to the fifa web site and read up on the ranking sytem very easy to understand even a south african could understand the simple logic lol ...

  • Zukisani - 2011-06-29 14:48

i hate to say this ,but i think its for the good of the country. i think now that the world cup and its fairytale has come and gone we can stop pretending to be united , so i suggest we go back to our respective sporting codes, whites stick to rugby and cricket if u wanna support a soccer team Europeans teams are available. leave our beloved bafana bafana even if they lose we will still be behind them .judging frm the comments i hv seen regarding this article i think its the best solution

      Daffy - 2011-06-29 15:56

I actually agree, as sad as it is.

  • SixMillionWayz - 2011-06-29 17:24

Bafana have slipped because most of the points that pushed us up have been devalued,as we accumulated them before and during the World Cup.It's got nothing to do with our results in 2011.The likes of Egypt will drop drastically when the next rankings are published and we will see BB rise again, especially on the continent.

      sechaba.lenong - 2011-07-04 10:10

Why have the points been devalued? Is it because of the "corruption scandal"?
