Amaglug-glug to face Zimbabwe

Cape Town - The next qualifying round for the CAF U23 Championships will see South Africa’s U23 national team take on Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwean U23s, affectionately called the Young Warriors, managed to progress to the next round after a 2-2 draw away to Swaziland on Sunday.

The first leg finished 0-0 which meant that the tie was decided on the away-goals rule.

After losing over two legs to Sudan earlier in the year, Owen Da Gama’s side failed to qualify for the All Africa Games and will now want to prove their doubters wrong when they come up against the Young Warriors.

Da Gama’s Amaglug-glug squad was not at full strength during the All Africa Games qualifiers. A number of star players were unavailable because the games did not fall on FIFA approved dates and as a result weren’t released by their clubs.

The first leg is set to take place between the 17th and 19th of July in Zimbabwe. By the time the game comes around the Amaglug-glug squad should be at full strength.

The winner of the tie will play in the CAF U23 Championships in Senegal at the end of the year.

Da Gama’s sights will surely also be set on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Brazil. In order to do so Amaglug-glug will have to finish in the top three at the tournament in Senegal.
