Amsterdam - Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that Thulani Serero is suffering from an abdominal injury after scans were conducted on the Bafana Bafana midfielder on his return to the Netherlands.
Serero insisted that he did not try to avoid national duty in view of Ajax's upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Barcelona.
Coach Gordon Igesund caused a stir last week after he kicked Serero out of his squad leading up to Bafana's final SWC qualifier against Botswana due to "ill-discipline".
However, Igesund later insisted that Serero remains part of his future plans for the national team, saying that the door remained open for the 2010/2011 PSL player of the year.
"He had a scan yesterday and the scans showed the medical staff that there was some small damage on his abdominal muscle and we know that he had some complaints last week,"' an Ajax’s press office told the Soccer Laduma website.
"It’s not his groin, but it’s possible that there is small damage there too because he has had complaints there."
Serero however, is still being considered for Ajax's weekend squad to face PEC Zwolle, with a decision to be made on Friday.
Ajax's first match in the UEFA Champions League takes place against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
