Bafana eye AFCON final

2012-12-04 14:22

Johannesburg - Head coach Gordon Igesund hopes for a repeat of Bafana Bafana's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1996.

South Africa are again hosting the tournament in 2013, after Libya withdrew due to political unrest in the country, with Bafana having lifted their only Afcon trophy as hosts 16 years ago.

“If you go to '96, it was magnificent,” Igesund said on Tuesday.

“We want to emulate that now. We want to get into the semi-finals, and the final, and do well. I believe we have the players to do that.”

Igesund said his main task in the build-up to the event was to reduce the size of the national squad.

“The league has been really exciting which means now my job is becoming very tough. The squad I have of 35 has to be cut down,” he said.

“After the game against Malawi, our preparations will really begin.”

Igesund assured that there was still a chance for players to cement their places in the final squad.

“Because of the fact that we have a match against Malawi, then a three-day break and then another camp, I can’t call one squad for this and one squad for the other.

"So that is why I have called up a squad of plus-minus 30 players and keep on changing them.

“I would also like to give some of the players who have recently returned to action after injuries, a chance to prove themselves."

At this stage, Igesund said he had an outline of the core group of players he would use for Afcon, but the selection of the final team would present a challenge.

“We never said it was going to be an easy task. It's going to be a difficult task.

"Right now I've got a (confirmed) squad of about 16 or 17 players and I need to make sure of the other group of players.

“It would have been nice to work with the players every single day.”

Igesund expected little known Cape Verde, their opponents in the opening match at FNB Stadium on January 19, to pose a difficult challenge.

“Cape Verde are not going to be a walk in the park. Twenty of their players are playing in the league in Portugal. We need to know a lot more about them.”

South Africa will play three warm-up matches against Malawi in Durban on December 22, Norway in Cape Town on January 8, and Algeria in Soweto on January 12.

Whot? Is this a December fools joke. SAFA gave Gordon a rope and shame Gordon now looks like he is prepared to hang him self, I didn't expect such baseless remarks from an intelligent coach like him. The damage in Bafana can never be renovated in two mounths, Gordon should know better, who are the players he is refering to? Fact number 1. is WE DON'T HAVE WORLD CLASS PLAYERS period. If you think I am out of my mind can you please name just one Bafana player who commands a regular first team choice in the bigger leagues? NONE,and that shows you how far behind we are to compete and compare our selves with the best fact number 2. A team is not made by individual players,a team is a collective effort from different individuals who have the same goal same determination and most important the same spirit, that is why there's what we call team spirit and you cannot have that in a couple of weeks,it takes years and we have such teams in the Afcon that have been together FOR YEARS Zambia,Code'voire etc we just got a biting from Zambia not because they are the best but the SPIRIT they posses those boys can die for each other and we don't have that. Fact number 3.let's brace ourselves for an embarasment by Capeverde, you just mentioned that most of these boys play in Portugal which is one of the best leagues in the world, a futebal powerhouse which produced the greatest names Your OZEBIO,FiGO,NANI,RONALDO, look at their standings in world rankings, they've been nominated as one of the best African teams recently, so if we think all those facts and statistics are just a fluke watch the space. All these shows you that there's something positive they are doing over there and what is that? FACT NUMBER 5.which is DEVELOPMENT as long as we take this word lightly as jaaaaas nje another boring song, we are going nowhere, we have to start from scratch in schools take care of those 6 year 8 12 year boys groom and nature them all the way to the top, thaaaats exatly how this country can produce the proudly made in South Africa world class players our self made Ballotelis Drogbas Adebayos and Esiens and we have money and infrastructures what we need is good administrators who are selfless and passionate about the beatifull game not power hungry monsters, . FACT NUMBER 5. Come the 19th If we happen to go as far as the semi finals, it would be by mere LUCKY axatly the what we call Madiba Magic that interfered in '96 not because we are on the right track. Gordon is a very good clever coach however giving him such a huge task in such a short space of time its not gonna help, so is the choping and changing of coaches is not gonna help us either give Gordon 20 years let's support him, put good qualified coaches in our junior teams who will work hands on with him then I promise you we will have a 16 year old super star playing for Barcelona or real Madrid.
