Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar has scathingly criticised the national team’s performance against Morocco in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D clash.
In a lapse of concentration, South Africa suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against the Atlas Lions in the 90th minute courtesy of a M'bark Boussoufa strike.
Meanwhile, 37-year-old Pienaar took to Twitter to share his grievances during and after the match.
Before the match kicked off, Pienaar was all positive and said: "Good luck #BafanaBafana re kaofela"
With no goals at half-time and the score still the same minutes into the second stanza, Pienaar was calling for coach Stuart Baxter to bring on Thembinkosi Lorch.
"Come on coach we’ve seen enough, time to give Lorch a run out #BafanaBafana," he said.
After the full-time whistle, Bafana Bafana failed to register a single shot on target with just two attempts at goal.
Pienaar then said: "That’s what you get when you try defending the whole game."
In his parting words with his nearly 400 000 followers, he said: "Time to take out the calculator."
The defeat leaves South Africa on the brink of a return flight back home but it all depends on the other results in Group E and F (see here).
