Mashaba upbeat despite AFCON exit

Mongomo - South Africa coach Shakes Mashaba insisted that his side performed well at the Africa Cup of Nations despite going out in the group stage.

Bafana Bafana once again threw away a lead on Tuesday as they lost 2-1 to Ghana in Mongomo to bow out bottom of Group C without a win.

"We lost the match in the second half. We played well in the first half but after the break we sat back," said Mashaba.

"The two goals we conceded did not come from us defending badly, but because there were too many players in our box and our goalkeeper could not see.

"We played well in qualifying against some very strong teams, and we played well here too," added the coach, whose side lost 3-1 to Algeria before drawing 1-1 with Senegal in their previous outings.

"Against Algeria the result did not reflect what happened in the match and it was the same against Senegal, when we had lots of chances."

Defender Anele Ngcongca added: "It is disappointing to crash out of the competition like this. We scored first against Algeria and against Senegal only to come back and concede goals, and it was the same story against Ghana.

"We sat back too much in the second half, too deep and allowed them too much space to shoot at our goal."
