Fans file in for AFCON final

Johannesburg - A swell of spectators converged on the National Stadium ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) closing ceremony at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Fans from both sides - Nigeria and Burkina Faso - arrived in their droves.

There were also local fans in yellow Bafana Bafana jerseys making their way to their seats.

The AFCON local organising committee (LOC) confirmed the official attendance of 77 855 spectators, despite claiming in advance that a sell-out crowd was expected at the 94 000-seater stadium.

Ground staff were covering the field in a rainbow canvas in preparation for the closing ceremony, which was scheduled to start at 18:45 - a little over an hour before kick-off.

Mini stages on each side of the pitch had been erected to display the national flags of both Nigeria and Ghana.

After steady cloud cover throughout the morning, the skies cleared, though showers were forecast later in the evening.
