Johannesburg - Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is unavailable for the team's last group game against Burkina Faso at the African Cup of Nations after injuring his right knee.
The Chelsea player was taken to a Luanda hospital on Sunday to undergo tests after sustaining a knock in training.
Ghana spokesman Randy Abbey told AP: "We don't know the extent of the injury, but he won't be available for the next game. It's official."
Essien had only returned from more than a month out due to a hamstring injury in Ghana's 3-1 loss to Ivory Coast on Friday.
The Black Stars must beat Burkina Faso on Tuesday to finish second in Group B and reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
