World Rugby rushes in new law change

Cape Town - World Rugby’s has announced the inclusion of a new law that will be introduced into the game immediately.

The new law reads as follows:

Law 9.19 In open play, any player may lift or support a player from the same team. Players who support or lift a teammate must lower the player to the ground safely as soon as the ball is won by a player of either team.

Sanction: Free-kick

On the surface, the law seems to place further focus on player safety and a side could now be penalised for dangerous play even if they do not make contact with a member of the opposing team.

The new law will likely impact lineouts and kickoffs the most.
