Top Ireland No 9 signs contract extension

Dublin - British and Irish Lions scrumhalf Conor Murray has signed a new contract that will keep him in Ireland until at least June 2022.

Murray is currently sidelined with a neck problem but the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has moved to secure his services on extended terms.

The 29-year-old has emerged as one of the world's top halfbacks and could command a lucrative contract overseas but has committed once again to provincial side Munster and Ireland.

Murray, who has won 67 Test caps for Ireland, helped the Lions scramble a hard-fought drawn series with New Zealand in 2017 before starring as Ireland swept to the Grand Slam in the 2018 Six Nations.

"Conor is a genuinely world-class player and he has illustrated this through the consistent quality of the performances he delivers for both Ireland and Munster," said IRFU performance director David Nucifora.

"He has played a central role in driving the success that has been achieved at national level and we are delighted that he will continue to play his rugby in Ireland for at least the next three seasons."

"I am delighted to have signed on with the IRFU until at least 2022," said Murray, who has forged a formidable half-back partnership for both Ireland and the Lions with Johnny Sexton.

"Over the past few seasons I've enjoyed great days in the green of Ireland and the red of my home province Munster. I love playing here and look forward to making more lifelong memories in the next few years."
