Still no Whiteley in Golden Lions team

Cape Town - Springbok and Lions fans will have to wait a little longer for Warren Whiteley's return to the playing field.

The 30-year-old has been out with a knee injury since mid-March.

The initial diagnosis suggested that Whiteley would miss around four weeks of action, but three months later there is still no sign of his return.

Whiteley had been named in the Lions squad that toured Australasia in April, but he was withdrawn from that squad the day before the team was due to leave South Africa.

With the Golden Lions currently in SuperSport Rugby Challenge action, there had been the hope that Whiteley might be included for Friday's clash against the Valke in Johannesburg.

But, when the team was named on Thursday, there was no sign of Whiteley.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, meanwhile, said this week that he expects Whiteley to be available for the Rugby Championship, which gets underway in August.

Whiteley had been named Bok captain under Allister Coetzee last year but lasted just two matches before injury then ruled him out for the remainder of 2017.

The Lions, meanwhile, are next in Super Rugby action when they travel to Durban to take on the Sharks on June 30.
