Kipchoge topped an online vote to win the award against Kolisi, Australian cricketer Steve Smith, golfer Tiger Woods of American and footballer Megan Rapinoe of the American national team.

In October, Kipchoge became the first person to run a marathon distance in under two hours albeit in tailor-made conditions including multiple pacesetters and special running shoes.

He completed the 42.195km distance in 1:59.40. He was also the winner of the presitious London Marathon in 2019.

Kolisi led South Africa to victory over England at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

He, along with his team-mates, were welcomed back by gigantic crowds on their subsequent return to South Africa which included trophy parades in a number of cities including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban.
