New Springbok Monopoly game hits the shelves

Cape Town - As South Africa’s excitement starts to build for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the first ever range of Springbok board and card games will be hitting stores from Monday, August 26.

SA Rugby’s Springbok Monopoly, Springbok Top Trumps cards and playing cards have landed in South Africa and are ready to play!

The Springbok Monopoly board game is a twist on the classic board game. Participants travel around the board and buy their favourite Springbok players and rugby stadiums - they then negotiate with opponents in an attempt to build a rugby empire.

A rugby ball, boot, goal posts, whistle and trophy replace the original tokens like the top hat. Monopolists will build stands and stadiums and trade their way to success.

Player selection for the Monopoly board has been kept a secret prior to the launch, leading to speculation around who will make the cut and how the players will be ranked. With the most-loved Bok ‘The Beast’ taking the top spot, there is room for much debate around the selection and ranking of players on the board. The games hits stores on the same day as the Springbok squad for Japan is planned to be announced. How similar will the Rugby World Cup squad be to the Monopoly squad?

A card game as part of the popular ‘Top Trumps’ series has also been developed. The Top Trumps cards features key facts on selected Springbok players. Rate the team's great players on their Caps, their Height, their Tries and the ultimate test; the Top Trumps Tackle Rating. Read all about their achievements as you try and collect all 30 cards from your opponent.

"We are always busy looking for games to play while being on tour. This will definitely be our new favourite and I can't wait to compete and play this along with my team-mates,"says Damian Willemse.

"Board games are really fun and interactive to play as a family. As for featuring in it, well I'm sure my kids will have a good laugh if they see their dad” says Warren Whiteley.

There is also a Waddingtons 52-card deck of playing cards with action shots of Springboks from recent years.

This is the first time the Springboks have featured on these classic games. It remains to be seen whether South Africans compete in the games with the same passion and competitive spirit as the Springboks show on the field.

Customers can expect to find Springbok Monopoly, playing cards and Top Trumps cards in-store and online from August 26.
