Cape Town - PRO14 side Munster are in the hunt to sign former France international Mathieu Bastareaud on a short-term contract, according to reports.
The 30-year-old left Toulon at the end of the 2018/19 campaign May and will join American side Rugby United New York in January.
Bastareaud was expected to play a part in the Rugby World Cup, but having been omitted from the squad by coach Jacques Brunel, that leaves a gap for the powerhouse centre to sign for a club before heading across the Atlantic.
Although unconfirmed, the 2019/20 PRO14 season is due to start in late August or early September.
Midi Olympique are claiming that the Limerick-based outfit are one of those interested as they look to fill the hole left by Leicester-bound Jaco Taute and their Ireland internationals, who will be away in Japan.
The French newspaper say that Johann van Graan’s men have made a “concrete offer,” but they will have to fend off competition from former club Stade Francais and Vern Cotter’s Montpellier, who are also believed to be in the running.
