Cape Town - Former All Blacks legend Richie McCaw and his wife Gemma have thanked their well-wishers from a babymoon in Hawaii after last week announcing they are expecting their first child.

OPINION: There will be no Lions miracle in Christchurch

According to the Stuff website, the McCaws are holidaying in sunny Honolulu and have yet to speak publicly about the news, aside from on social media.

Gemma McCaw posted on Wednesday night thanking those who had wished the couple all the best since the first announcement on Friday.

"Thank you so much for all your kind messages and congratulations. We really are looking forward to our best adventure yet ?? #grateful."

Gemma McCaw posted on social media on Friday night: "Rich and I are very excited to announce that we are expecting our first baby later this year #overthemoon #mcbaby"

She posted a tiny pair of adidas running shoes, along with a men's and women's pair.

?The McCaws married in January 2017 in a top-secret ceremony in Wanaka.

The former All Black flank retired from rugby after leading New Zealand to a second consecutive Rugby World Cup title in 2015, beating Australia 34-17 in the final in London.

Richie McCaw, 37, played a record 148 Tests for the All Blacks and is the most capped rugby player of all time.

Gemma McCaw, 28, retired from competitive hockey last October.

She played 246 matches for New Zealand and scored 71 goals after making her international debut in 2008.

She won silver and bronze medals with New Zealand at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Glasgow, respectively.
