Jones names first assistant coach

Cape Town - A day after releasing three assistants with ties to former England coach Stuart Lancaster, Eddie Jones has appointed former England captain Steven Borthwick as forward coach.

Borthwick, capped 57 times for his country, formed part of the Japanese World Cup coaching team under Jones.

The two had also previously worked together at English club Saracens.

"This is a huge honour to be asked, as these chances don't come around often," said Borthwick, 36, in a statement on the RFU website.

"We have an exciting group of players in England and I am really looking forward to the challenge and getting England beating the best teams in the world."

Jones was equally ecstatic to welcome Borthwick to his team, calling him a "great addition."

"I have known him for a long time through Saracens and Japan and he has done fantastic work as a coach.

"Steve has a huge amount of international experience as a player and a captain and his coaching in Japan in recent years shows he can get the best out of the players at the highest level. He is a great addition and I look forward to working with him again as we look ahead to the start of the RBS 6 Nations next year.”

On Monday, Jones had informed Andy Farrell, Mike Catt and Graham Rowntree that he would not require their services going forward.

They were part of England's disastrous World Cup campaign under Lancaster, which saw a host nation knocked out in the group stages for the first time.
