In his new autobiography, Dan Carter − My Story, Carter details an incident during the 2003 Super 12 when the he and his Crusaders team-mates enjoyed a night out on the town in the Mother City.

Carter and two team-mates had become separated from the team and, briefly, the flyhalf found himself alone while they walked to a nightclub.

"Out of nowhere two guys came up, grabbed me and pinned me up against a wall," Carter wrote.

"One of them demanded my phone, but I was a bit drunk and cocky. 'It's alright', I replied, 'I'm talking on it'.

"'Get your gun out and shoot him', I heard. My blood ran cold. I handed him the phone, put my head down and walked off as quickly as I could, my pulse racing, entirely sobered up."
